    Stuck in low range

    Hi all,

So today I swapped over the front output housing in order to install the CDL. Mine was one of the unfortunates with no internals.

I've got it back together and have diff lock but it is stuck in low range. I used the original selector so I know that is not the issue.

Tomorrow I'll go for a drive in low range and get it heated up to se if it will move but in the meantime any ideas?

I don't really know the history of the donor TC so this may have been a previous issue but I don't think so. It has been in my shed for over a year so could possibly have seized I guess.

    Cheers.

That low hi selector is in the main part of the TC not the nose, however AFAIR the shaft may move forward into the nose as you change ratios.
Perhaps as simple as some sealant blocking the range selector.
If you moved the selector while working maybe the ball bearing has slipped in behind the shaft.
I seem to recall that I had to adjust my selector detente when I did the job and it was a PITA as is right next to the chassis rail.

    Thanks Phillip. So update.

I put it in low range to drive up on ramps. Did the work and lever is in low range position but box is actually in high range. Didn't drive last night as was dark by the time I finished. So it seems that I have moved it into high range whilst changing the nose over. I'm not sure but I have a horrible feeling this is going to mean bad news with regard to that ball bearing behind the spring. I didn't change the gears in the box but they came forward an inch or two as I took the nose off.

It's very wet and cold today so can't work on it now so any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I seem to recall that there is a reference to this in the original "how to" done by a USA owner.
I will see if I have still got it.

OK and I have found it and yes you have to be careful not to have the HI/low shaft move forwards.
PM me your email address and I will email the PDF to you.

Damn I should have asked for this beforehand. Saw references to it all over the internet but the original site hosting it is no longer valid. Lesson learnt. Pm sent. Thanks Philip.

Looking at the donor tc I think I can see what has happened. As the hi lo selector has moved forward that spring has pushed the ball bearing into the next recess. So looks like the easiest thing to do might be to see if I can cut a hole just above where the spring is located and pull it from there. Seems drastic but can't see any other way as there is no access. And don't want to have to drop the whole tc. What do you think?

Yes I now maybe remember that I removed the plug on the Hi low detent and fished the ball bearing out with a magnet.

I wondered why I remember tightening up the plug again and what a PITA it is right next to the chassis.

I don't know what you can do now. The ball bearing may fall into the bottom and you can get anew ball bearing.(hopefully)

It looks from his description that the detent ball will sit in the selector shaft tunnel , so you will have to take off the front again and remove the hi low cluster , then fish the detent ball out with a magnet pushed down the selector shaft drilling..
My Hi low cluster did not come out when I did mine so I didn't have the problem. I don't know why I adjusted my detent, although I think it was to make it easier to shift from hi to low. As you have probably guessed by now my memory of about 6 years ago is hazy, hell I am lucky to remember what I had for breakfast.
    Regards PhilipA
