Doug have a look at ya ecu plug as mentioned. ULR in Malvern had quick postage and reasonable pricing for o rings and copper washers and a new loom when I did mine.

An bit of an update ,yesterday I went and checked the ecu plug and it was ok cleaned it up any way with acetone and compressed air then started engine cold and it started with diesel knock , smoke and running rough but settled down quickly but not completely ,it was a bit difficult to tell the colour of the smoke but it smelt like white smoke ,I shut it down and went and ordered injector seal and washers . Started it again this morning and it started as normal and drove down to the post office 10k round trip no power loss ran perfect .Now some questions what is the nanocm measuring when you check for cyl balance ? fuel delivery , compression , temperature or something else as the numbers were all over the place depending on whether the engine was cold or hot or under load . I noticed that number 1 was the one most constantly out of balance with a reading of -5 most of the time while the others were dancing around 3to -3 but sometimes jumping to 8 or 9

It's measuring the difference in relative speed between the holes on the flywheel / ring gear from the crank angle sensor, so when for example you have an injector washer leak ( which I'm sure you do ) the above info will be fed to the ECU which will then try to change the injector pulse width to compensate the imbalance ( which , if the leak is bad enough it won't be able to do, giving a rough idle / running, smoke etc

Check the harness plug where it's connected to the head and if there is oil the symptoms are the same like with oil at the ECU

    update

Replaced seals and washers cleaned harness and plugs ,they were all clean and dry but still done them . ran ok on test dive but cyl balance danced around a bit with on load but settled down under load and starts hot or cold . But went and collected a tandem car trailer about 70 k round trip and when pulled up at home idle was very rough and cyl balance was out of control ,varying from -8 to -22 , turned off and restarted cyl balance back to normal and idling smooth . one injector long code and all cyl had injector open circuit code .

You-ll have to investigate the harness between the head and red plug cos it used to get chafed under the engine, see this D2a Td5 misfiring & cutting out (engine harness)

Thank you for the advise and you weren't far wrong ,the plug between the head and injector harness was not fully connected ,pushed it all the way home and problem solved almost . I have a fuel dilution problem that probably was there before I replaced the seals and has not gone away . But starting ok hot and cold and not cutting out now and no diesel knock when starting so we have sorted a few problems . I have purchased a complete D2 from my nephew that rolled over with a brand new cyl head fitted for less than a week, $1000 . Just have to get it back to my place, 700k round trip . Might have to use the old series 2A to do it ,I will need a couple of cut lunches to do that that .
