Planned Upgrade of Stock Standard TD5

Amazing delivery times, 5 days delivery from GB for both the Turner pieces for the head and the Turbo and Manifold, delivered on a Sunday???!!!.


It was with some trepidation that I opened up the Darkside package. Turbo a known I suppose, that it has an pre drilled exhaust gas temp probe just aft of the inlet is an absolute bonus.


The manifold was a lot more substantial than I had anticipated. While I don't have a measurement for the wall thickness of the tube, it is by simple finger gauge SOLID. I am a little more confident with the longer term durability rather than worryingly apprehensive.

I must say that it looks really impressive with beautiful welds.

I wonder why stainless and not "steam pipe"

So the turbo is much further out from the head, so no second battery and new exhaust needed?

I think the main issue with the so called "limp mode" is if the EAT senses the torque converter slipping when locked, that will throw a code for sure.A bigger torque converter would probably fix that.

Other factors would be the theoretical torque production map, which if you go beyond this will also throw a code.

There are probably a couple of ways around that one, but realistically we are already at the limit of the 4hp22 anyway as already mentioned.

Hence my interest with a 4HP24 and a HD torque converter. Apparently I have a wee tweak, with about 420-430 Nm from the Bruce Davis chip (normally limited to a max of 400 for 22 auto and 500 for manual D2).

Difficult to take the pics but these are representative anyway, actually didn't take too much notice of the length of the pipes but did a couple of pics with a ruler, then a comparison with the standard manifold. Fitted the width will not be as far out as this as the pipes are upward.

The whole kit comes with SS 2.5" downpipe and flex, as well as SS straight through for middle muffler.

As noted re the exhaust in previous post, but as far as the battery goes, am intending to make a dual battery tray for the front with a holding plate for the ECU, don't want to relocate that to the cabin.

Having read pretty extensively on the viability of SS versus cast iron / stove pipe, the flow efficiency by maintaining the heat within the exhausted gas and not losing it to absorption by the manifold, thereby ensuring it maintains it charge / speed until it hits the turbo would be the determining factor in choice. THEY better be right!




As far as second batteries go, has anyone used or know of someone who has used this material?

Just re reading my gumff, thought struck me, do we have knowledge on the % difference experienced by having the probe in the EGR location versus having it closer to the outlet? Irrespective of what the manifold is made of, there must be some loss by the time it reaches the turbo or the manifold would be cold.
