Yeah I thought transfer myself as well, possibly very low on oil, that'll make some heat!

When the autos overheat you can smell the oil (or ATF) in it burning. It sounds correct.

I think it is far more likely to be the auto which produces a lot of heat rather than the transfer which produces very little heat.

I will check the transfer case when home. Do a couple of fluid changes. Install a thermometer in the gearbox and see what is happening. The temperature of the transfer box is always very low. The box has suffered from delayed engagement for a while now so have been expecting to replace / recondition at some stage in the not too distant future.

So what oil are you smelling, ATF or gear oil?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

    Atf. Apologies for the confusion.

So I know my gearbox temp warning light / sensor is definitely not working as it should. Could this be part of the issue?

a blocked transmission filter will also cause the trans to overheat, the faster you go the hotter it gets, pump cavitation but you would be lucky to hear it over engine.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Righto. Hope at least some of you are still bearing with me.!

Got home safe and sound fortunately.

I have since checked the warning sensor and indicator light and it is working. So I figured there was a blockage somewhere. I then changed the filter and oil but problem persisted.

So then I pulled the cooler and confirmed there was flow. The cooler looked OK with not too much gunk inside or out but gave it a clean anyway.

Just been for a test drive and it seems OK. Definitely lower than it was. So maybe a partial blockage that cleared when I pulled lines or emptied cooler.

Still couple of questions. The standard temp sensor is on the cool side. Why?! And where are people / ashcroft measuring these temperatures? Obviously there is going to be a big difference whether it's bottom of sump, box itself or on cool side of radiator...

I was measuring temps of 150 odd at sump with laser thermometer and more if I pointed it at the box itself. But by the time that atf made it's way round to the sensor it could well have cooled below 120.

On the plus side of all this, I used penrite atf fs and my gear change has never been smoother.

Will keep monitoring and install some kind of temp guage but I reasonably hopeful it's fixed. Oh yeah was a fair amount of shavings on magnet but no large chunks so again that's a win. Hoping for a few more kms out of this box now.

Thanks for everybody's input. Much appreciated and was very helpful.
