    Hi James,

I took it for a drive the other night and it actually drives really well with good power. It was hard to tell if the smoke was blue or black at night but there was a slight smell of oil from the exhaust. So I'm guessing there's still some in there. Might be an excuse to upgrade the exhaust! I checked for blowby about a week ago and it didn't really look bad to me. Maybe I'll record it and post it up. After having my provent 200 for about 4 years in the garage I finally installed it while it's been off the road. I'll check the oil level tomorrow. I'm just itching to get it offroad again as I've forgotten how nice it is to drive.
    Cheers

Re blow-by, make yourself a manometer and measure the blow-by in inches of water then convert the reading to psi to obtain crankcase pressure. With a metering attachment it is also possible to measure blow-by and convert to litres per minute but for me the crankcase pressure is the most relevant measure, however, I have not been able to discover a LR specified value for the Td5. For what it’s worth my Td5 with >440,000kms on the clock displaces 6 column inches of water at idle (780rpm) and 4 column inches at 2000 rpm (no load). 4 inches = 0.14 psi.

Just came across this and thought I would clear some things up.

For starters EVERY turbo available for the TD5 is "off the shelf" the difference being CRTurbos cut the flanges off and weld new ones in place. No different to the CNC Machined spacer, which actually allows for brilliant access to both oil filters which can be difficult with other VGTs/VNTs

Secondly just because Jose said "we tried that turbo back in 2001 and we didnt like it", means very little. Just means either he couldnt get it to run properly, wasnt worth it financially, wasnt requested or just didnt suit his style of mapping.

Ive had Empires VNT in my 110 for almost 2 years now and roughly 40k miles on road and off road. What I can say is the spool time is almost non existent, power delivery is fantastic very linear and refined however I suppose thats more down to Gareths skill as a tuner.

The turbo is watercooled and oil cooled. I run a STACK coolant gauge and have never seen it move above 104°c and that was my 2.8t 110, fully loaded with tools and 3 passengers doing 95+ up hill...

EGTs have never exceeded 550 even during the above, however when my 110 was mapped my TD5inside they frequently went above 950 barely pushing hard.

Smoke is minimal but power is there. Dynoed at 230bhp/530nm however this was on a standard airbox and a slightly split intercooler. Since been replaced. With torque very low in the rev range. Exceptional for running in sand and steep hills. So much so it actually squats when I put my foot down

Since install ive had zero problems with the turbo and zero problems with Empire as the tuner. I cant say the same for Td5inside whe my 110 was tuned by them.

Hope thats cleared some things up for you twr7cx.

If your want list is based on compared to a standard setup, then the Turbo Technics S208 will achieve that. It will significantly increase your response, eliminate lag, substantially increase low end power/torque and improve the mid. There will be minor improvements at the top end (mainly due to the improved impeller design by using a CNC machined unit rather than a cast) too - but you didn't list this as something you were chasing anyhow, so it's just a bonus.

It's also likely the VNT that's been around the longest so has a proven track record of reliable use.

I recommend using Jose from Td5 Inside to tune for it. Get rid of the turbo boost box, have a software MAF clamp applied rather and upgrade your MAP sensor to the Bosch Mercedes-Benz unit (with the tune adjusted to suit) if needed.

You'll also need to remove the waste gate actuator from service. I suggest plumbing the waste gate boost line directly into your inlet manifold/EGRdelete inlet to maximise response and boost levels.

They're available from a few places include Bell Auto Service and Alisport:
TD5 VGT Uprated Turbocharger Road and Off Road - Bell Auto Services, BAS Remaps, Custom Remaps York, Performance upgrades, Service & Repairs and much more. BAS Powering the Landrover tuning world!
Td5 VGT uprated turbocharger - AlliSport

Alternatively, the upcoming Alive Tuning VGT may suit your needs to but you'll need to wait for it's release, it'll likely be more expensive, but give better top end gains, and doesn't have a history of proven reliable use.

Storm Tuning also offer various VGT (see their website at < Storm Tuning – Bespoke Land Rover Tuning > for details but I'm not aware of details.

Empire Tuning have adapted an off the shelf VGT using an adapter spacer to the Td5. A number of other big names had previously tested this turbo on the Td5 application and found it lacking. I'd avoid it.

You may also wish to consider upgrading your exhaust manifold when fitting the new turbocharger to maximise performance gains.

For clarification, when you say "power.. we all want that" - where do you want it though? I assume from your line above your looking at down low and mid range for it. But given you currently have a hybrid fitted you likely have improved mid and top end than standard at present - are you wanting to retain these along with your want list above? If so you'll need to be looking towards a hybrid VNT, something bigger, rather than the S208 which is close to standard turbo sizing.
