Thanks for all the replies, and yes it is that separate hole. The plug I temporarily sealed it with was hollow, and as the pressure built up, it seemed to seal itself. I had just picked up a tonne of wood on the trailer 10 minutes before and had just gone up the first and only hill, but didn't think this could make any difference to the cooling system.
As said, RAVE shows this as been connected to the EGR cooler, hose number 36, so why it decided to leak there yesterday I will have no idea, must have been something to do with the heavy load is all I can think of ?
I will do a better job of a double seal with decent glue and keep a close eye on it. I have been losing a small amount of coolant for a few months now, so maybe this has been the culprit all along. A D2 mystery.
I like the sound of the E30 tank with alarm, will research and make a trip to the breakers yards to see what I can find.

The tanks had a hole when used in different models. The tank is from BMW, (I think)
