It will be a 4.0 litre if a D2, the V8s are common to have head gasket problems and are easily overheated. They are unforgiving if they have got hot.
get it pressure tested before you waste money on parts.
G'day
Well I took the plunge and took on a Disco series 2 , V8 3.9 with the intention of taking her around Australia, towing a caravan.
Now this Disco was owned by a mechanic for most of its life ( for what thats worth ) but ended up as a 3/4th vehicle in a nursery here on the Sunshine Coast and basically was just not used. 175,000kms on the clock. Drives really well. However for the price I paid I wasn't expecting a mint edition to the family : )
So I've cleaned her up cosmetically, done oil and filter change immediately to see what maybe in the oil, so far so good.
Didn't like the look of the coolant level etc and suspected it was running very hot, and it basically overheated and cutout. Got her home on the tow truck rather than risk limping home.
I'm going to replace all the coolant hoses, coolant, thermostat and radiator as I don't believe any of this work has ever been done on this vehicle.
What I'm looking for is a general idea of what I should be doing with this vehicle to get her ready for a long trip, maybe what to be looking for or considering replacing before undertaking such a trip.
Oh and after over heating she will not start and maybe a coincidence but now the rear windows don't operate ? tested all the fuses and yes fuses 12 and 13 as suggested in the owners manual. Turns over but won't start, smell petrol too.
Any advice from anyone who has experience with this particular vehicle would be so much appreciated.

Make yourself known to Pedro the Swift, he's all but your next door neighbor.

Flush the unknown coolant well before refilling.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
compression test first.
Cheers : ) rego states series 2 but yes all the literature I've read points to it being a series 1 , March 1999 build date, was the year of change over I think. Ok will do a compression test but having said that I am determined to get this Disco running as it should and happy to spend some money on her, I bought it cheap enough and was prepared to spend on it. TIME and MONEY : ) : ) : ) no doubt.
most obvious difference between disco 1 & 2 from a distance is the tail lights, up high on the 2, lower down on the 1.
Mine is also 1999 build, but a disco 1.
3.9V8 badge on engine, the 2 would have 4.0 Badge.
As for the windows; there is a rear window relay that is common to fall out.
worth checking.and I note that only the rear windows have a relay (R152) in circuit. Have you tried replacing that? It's in the passenger compartment fusebox
Edit; window relay is for D2, D1 has different thing window ECU. see here;
Disco 1 rear windows not working
Overheated, check hoses etc. also look for signs of coolant splash around front of engine. I once had a top radiator hose split on me, luckily, (or not) it was spraying coolant directly onto the distributer (D1), it started running on only a few cylinders but that was an indication something was seriously wrong. Pulled over way before the temp would have risen. If this has happened, distributer may have got a hosing and could be why not starting also.
Note; D2 has different type distributor at rear of engine.
Other easy difference to spot is the door handles, recessed on the D1, sticking out on the D2.
If the maintenance has been a bit slack, the first thing to suffer is generally the camshaft. Very small oil galleries, easily choked by dirty oil.

Obvious thing is the D2 has a long bootie, D1 has a short bootie.
3.9 engine has 3.9 written on the plenum box, 4.0 being a Thor engine has no engine size marked on it and has a "bannana" style plenum.

V8's run very hot in D2's not sure about D1. I know from experience two new heads. The temp gauge is a waste of space and gives a dummy normal reading until it is too late. There is a L/R mechanic on North side of Briz that has a mod that will keep the engine temp down at about 82.5 no matter whether towing or what ever. The standard layout the temp will be over 100 always. He normally only works on weekends but some week days as well. If you are interested I can give you his phone number via a PM.
