No. I had no idea that our wonderful Mario existed, and I believed the LR unreliability hype, and then I started down the wonderland rabbit hole with the amazing Adrian and my auto. My D2 has been something of a nightmare, mainly my fault from trying to save some $$$$, which wound up costing me $$$$$$$$$$$.
I go round in circles about the car, as when it goes it's fantastic, so I vacillate between keeping it and spending $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on it, in which case the airbags go back in. The ride is so much better, and I love that the thing can be raised to hook up a trailer. if i keep it I might retrofit ACE off the wreck I have.

I have said, in this thread, that if forced to choose I'd keep the D1. But boy would I miss the TD5. But, I can keep both!



God I'm an idiot.

My D1 was great, 3.9 on gas and when finally I got it running right (lots of help from bee-utey) it was a pleasure to drive. It needed a massive amount of up keep and finally got rid of it because of the cost. Then the D2 arrived and I love it, more than than the D1, absolutely. I find it nicer to drive more reliable and less maintenance (so far). It tows well although I’ve not had more than 2t on it and is bigger inside. D1 or D2, for me definitely D2

Can you fit ACE into none ACE D2? Mine doesn't have it but the wreck here does and it was always super nice on the road. Mine is too but it's rear airbags keep it pretty solid cornering at speed.

To me one of the better things about a D2 is that you can fit an Engel 40L lengthwise in the cargo bay on a slide.

This allows a far more efficient loading .

I have fitted Recaro seats , and when I did it I took the opportunity to set the driver's seat back by about 30MM. At 188CM, I have sufficient legroom.

I love my TD5 for its low down torque which is far superior when towing than a V8 . I previously had a very modified for torque 3.9 91 RRC as some may recall.
I love my 150 L tank.

I grant that the ride without air bags and ACE is inferior to my RRC , but I prefer the reliability of springs and no ACE in the outback.

The D2 is far superior to the RRC, and therefore D1 on the highway especially when lifted , due to the hub centre steering geometry and the watts linkage.

if that torque thing was true LR wouldnt have used that silly td5 converter.. mine will stay locked up down to 1800rpm in 4th with the van on,, then just drive away. The TD5 might make its max Nm at only 1900rpm, but its still only 340nm..

I love my D2 on airbags. And mine does have the CDL, auto and ABS, traction control. I love the way it just slowly climbs up rocky ledges that would need so much momentum to get up without the traction control.

D1 lovers you scan keep your Spartan ride. When I want a taste of an asthmatic 200/300Tdi, I ride the Defender.

I agree with most of this. I could drive Melb-Adel in the 19970 D1 without squirming in the seat. 2 hrs tops in the 2000 D2, and I was shifting from cheek to cheek. Only had the basic D2, though, not leather.
Always felt like I had more room in the D1 up front. Played with seat rails on D2 in desperate (but failed) attempt to get adequate legroom.
Pretty awful economy in the 3.9 on gas, but glorious burble from the V8 made up for it.
Never ever felt even remotely confident to go to the same places in the D2 that I'd tackle in a heartbeat with the D1.

Regret ever selling the D1 (and far too cheaply). Never really had an issue reliability-wise.
Haven't missed the D2 for a moment.

Bought my white 5 seater TD5Auto new in Jan 04 and about a month later a good mate bought a low K 98D1. I am 183Cm and have zero issues with the driving position. From new we had fully tailored sheepskins fitted so I have never done any K's in nude D2 seats but I can drive from Melbourne the just out of Sydney without a break with no issues (spinal surgery in 97). Love its towing ability (tow a 23 foot Bertram) but plan on fitting an additional transmission cooler and when $ permits a tune. Love the ride but on an off road though its not a patch on the RRC we had before the Disco. Have been on a number of trips in the D1 and as it also had sheepskins I found the seats similar. The D1 Diesel lacked oomph and the turbo lag was friggin annoying to say the least. I bought mine without all of the extras as I figured it was just more stuff to go wrong. In the 17 years I have owned it I have replaced two injector looms, 2 oil coolers, engine mounts, tranfer case bearing, fuel cooler orings, done the oild pump bolt, taken the exhaust manifold off the re seal the stupid plug behind it (manifold not warped and no bolts sheared), every hose on the thing and the thermostat housing (just about to order an alloy header tank), one wheel bearing, three drivers side window winders (one due to a mechanic not fitting the first replacement properly), brake rotors and thats about it. Incredibly reliable and great to drive. I am on my third set of tyres in 272,000K's

My car has cloth seats. Non powered. Strangely, when Mario let me take his to Wombat I found it much more comfortable, with just enough leg room. It had leather and power. I wonder if the powered seats went back further. Never had a legroom issue on the pov spec D1.

Don't dawdle on that one! To me that is by far the most important mod you can do on an auto D2, especially if you tow.
