Unused Plugs & Sockets - is there a list or way of identifying them

On a 2003 2a I have noticed a number of unused/unpaired plugs and sockets. Today’s query is mainly about three under the bonnet but I’ve always wondered about how to identify the odd plug or socket I encounter. Are they for auxiliary options not fitted, fit-outs on the 2 but not included or made redundant on the 2a, proposed upgrades for the upcoming (at time of build) 3.
    Todays queries:
In the engine bay between the fuse box and header tank there is an ‘unused’ Orange multi pin female plug next to a grey twin that is plugged in. I’ve noticed in photos of unrelated threads that some vehicles have the Orange plug connected with the Grey plug ‘unused’.

Under the bonnet and rear of the engine bay - either side of the cabin air intake - are ‘unused’ female two pin plugs.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the above uses and if possible point me in the direction of being able to identify any further unknowns I encounter?
Photos attached - though the wide angle shot has inverted and I haven’t found yet how to delete or edit.

reckon this thread should be in the Discovery 2 section.

Pretty sure that the two plugs in the air plenum are for the heated windscreen seen in other markets.

    Yes, D2, not Series II.

For the OP, this is a Series IIA: From Childhood And For The Future: My 1967 Land Rover Series IIA • Petrolicious

Very likely. If I could see the wire colours, I could check RAVE (Rover AfterSales Viewing Environment**). On the 2-pin plug is that a purple wire with a white stripe?

Re future identificatation, have you got a copy of RAVE? The electrical library and wiring diagrams in that will be most useful.

If not, see: RAVE IIa CD ( 2003 )

** According to the genuine RAVE discs that I have.

The plugs in the air plenum are 100% for heated windscreen and the orange plug is for SLS and ACE which seems that your vehicle didnt have from factory
