I wouldn’t mind an EV to replace my Forester for city driving (I will probably do a conversion of some sort), but they are currently unworkable to me for long range travelling and off-roading. For example, the last time I drove to Darwin from Perth via the Nullarbor, I had a friend with me who was on a tight schedule. It was a spur of the moment trip and we had 9 days to get to Darwin (their flight was booked to get back to work), with a whole bunch of side trips included. After that I came home via the Top End. That’s not feasible in any current EV, which is why I have my Disco. It’s horses for courses.
As for the Simpson trip, I thought it was an awesome exercise to prove the tech and followed both the earlier attempt and this one. Real world considerations are currently beyond its scope though. The Suzuki was not carrying much of a payload, or was towing anything, as the support vehicle literally did the heavy lifting. That’s not to say Hydrogen, EV or some other tech will mature to take over from ICE in the future for longer ranged applications. It just might take a while.
Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.
