It's funny you say that! A couple of young fellas I know were telling me about how Toyota starlet are starting to become rare and hard to find etc. I said why would you ever want a starlet what a horrible car 😂

I never said I don't love the Landys! I'd much rather get there slowly and in style any day! I thought it was a really funny comparison that's all

So it seems that all of us still can enjoy whatever it was designed for, although I think diesel/petrol prices in 2035 upwards might be a bit too shocked at some degrees
The switch to EV or hydrogen has nothing at all to do with the planet running out of oil , or coal. I doubt you'll be able to 'enjoy' driving on oil at all maybe 5 -10 years after the EV proliferation, I get why you would want to , nostalgia , romance , yada yada like some folk still like driving old steam engines and vintage cars about.

Some people still smoke knowing it will kill them and possibly kill their loved ones too, so why would people like that give a **** about the health of the planet.

Hyundai is recalling what looks like all of the electric Konas to replace the battery pack as several have caught fire.

The last conversion I saw on a RRC was in LRO a couple of years ago using used Tesla batteries, which are a finite resource and which will probably rise in value and the conversion cost was AFAIR about Aud 50k.
The below is part of a Reuter’s report which I copied and pasted and I am crap at it

    regards PhilipA

The recall is one of the first mass battery pack replacements conducted by a major automaker.
“It’s very significant for both Hyundai and LG as we are in the early stages of the electric vehicle era. How Hyundai handles this will set a precedent not just in South Korea but also for other countries,” said Lee Hang-koo, senior researcher at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade.
The recall mostly concerns the Kona EV, Hyundai’s biggest-selling electric car which was first recalled late last year for a software upgrade after a spate of fires. One of the recalled Kona EVs caught fire in January, however, and South Korean authorities launched a probe into whether the first recall had been adequate.
LG Energy Solution, a division of LG Chem Ltd which manufactures the batteries, was quick to deflect criticism.
It said in a statement that Hyundai misapplied LG’s suggestions for fast-charging logic in the battery management system, adding the battery cell should not be seen as the direct cause of the fire risks.
South Korea’s transport ministry said in a statement that some defects had been found in some battery cells produced at LG Energy’s China factory. Hyundai did not comment on the cause of the fires.

Used Tesla cells will never be a finite resource, and are coming down in price as their efficiency increases.

Many people are Using Nissan Leaf as a conversion donor now, You can easily achieve 300HP and you can land a complete Leaf ex Japan for $10000 with plenty of battery life left.

    So why is that?
maybe because that is for a pre 2016 😍😍😣 Leaf with the small battery which is down to typically 80km range.

I did a bit of study on Leafs and the early ones are not pretty as there is no thermal management of the battery when charging.

There is a company in NZ which reconditions and upgrades Leaf batteries but it ain’t cheap and you generally cannot put a later battery in an early car.

Just on used Tesla batteries. Are you aware that many if not most wrecked Tesla’s in the USA now offered for auction have their batteries stolen before auction and not declared. Poor fool who buys one at auction as a non runner to find no battery.

You'd need to stay overnight or more to charge up the Cybertruck. I cannot see the charging infrastructure going through out this country. The population is small and the distances vast. One day we may be able to drive an EV to Perth or Darwin in less than a week.
I will buy a Tesla, one day. Not for off roading. I'll keep the D2 for that.
Yes “Range Anxiety” is a big issue with Australia’s big distance, but there is a lot more development going in to battery technology, than new Diesel engines.
Hybrid Electric is another viable option
Range will improve overtime, but in the next couple of years I can see a lot of us 4WD owners with a small electric city car, and we save our 4WD for those trips where its really needed.
Landrover has committed to delivering some all electric models in 2024, Jaguar will be all electric by 2025 .

Dont get me wrong - I love a big diesel, but I think the writing is on the wall

Crying. Im still struggling to power my D2a to 130kw/420Nm.

Not exactly comparing apples with apples .

Just a matter of fitting a few bits to your D2a and getting a decent tune to turn that frown up side down.

Want to put money on that ? I could do it now but I have better things to do, will easily be done by someone within 5 years, no problem. Electric already crossed the Simpson, CSR is just longer , no change in tech needed.
