Question Siemens VDO MAF sensor changes

My MY03 D2a Td5 has been having a few minor issues (slightly worse fuel economy, extra black smoke and hesitation on initial take off) which I diagnosed as faulty MAF sensor. Ordered and fitted a new Siemens VDO unit from Island4x4 in the UK. The old failed unit was the same brand but it would seem that there's been a few (perhaps) minor changes over the years since:

The 'SIEMENS' text is no longer moulded into the plastic barrel housing nor is there a barcode sticker. All other markings match and are inplace though:

In general the plastic fitting and joins looks to be a bit messier:

    The box it came in:

Anyone else found similar on recent Siemens VDO MAF units?
It certainly seems to perform like a genuine unit - in comparison I've used cheap aftermarket copies before and found the drivability of the vehicle to negatively suffer.

I'm about to order one tomorrow, the email is drafted, ready to send.
The readings on the current one are all over the place.

That's because the VDO units are just a branded aftermarket named OEM in tis case but not at the quality of those made to be genuine LR, here's the explanation D2 TD5 cutting out when warm | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum

No doubt you are correct, but there is also a huge difference in aftermarket brands, generally speaking the VDO unit should have good repeatability, the cheap ones do not, this means that the VDO can be properly calibrated by someone with the skills, obviously not everyone can do this and it will cost for someone to do it, so I guess it makes you question if they should be used?

I've had 2 VDO MAF's from island over the past couple months, they perform well and match the LR product pretty accurately, EXCEPT at low aircharge figures, so they could be a little laggy of the line.

It will however improve twr7cx's Smokeyness as a side effect, particularly at take off!

    Cheers

Fitted the new VDO MAF this morning and I have a TD5 back, it no longer dives like a 300Tdi.Siemens VDO MAF sensor changes

The packaging and moulding look identical to the photos above.

yes they are all coming that way now. the land rover part ref number sticker has the suffix G after it is supposed to be the supplier code for Genuine O.E.

I'm not insinuating that you dont know i just want to make it 100% clear with inside informations from a parts manufacturer. That G means it's made by the manufacturer(OEM) who makes the high quality parts which will be in LR box as Genuine LR and also lower quality ones as OEM/OE... in this case the real thing has LR suffix examples:
    1. OEM(aftermarket) or OE: MHK100620G | AIRFLOW MULTI POINT INJECT SENSOR - TD5 2.5L DEFENDER 1987-2006 - DISCOVERY 2 1998-2004 - FREELANDER 1 1996-2006 | Britpart | Discovery 2 - 1999 to 2004 | Britcar (UK) Ltd
    2. Genuine LR(also made by VDO): MHK100620LR - SENSOR - Land Rover Parts
i can tell 100% sure that not only the package makes the difference
