I’ve seen plenty of collapsed coils, and even a vehicle with shiny new ones go out and crack one in half on day 3 of a run.

Well maintained systems won’t suffer, as the parts won’t be 17 years old Changing rear air bag shocks on D2a to springs ??

Airbags are made of rubber, so they will deteriorate after time. But they never give up without prior warning. You will see the vehicle sag one side or another or it will drop the rear completely (Looks like a dog trying to wipe his bottom ). The benefits of air bags far out way the negatives. Just maintain them. Simples.

    It is up to you

Why send your car back in suspension development. If you are worried about outback stuff, maintenance and carry a spare airbag it is not that big or heavy and if your worried about the compressor get yourself some schrader Valves to inflate the bags. Steel springs are no guarantee but hey it is up to you.

    Maintenance for AirBAGS

Something not spoken about often (if at all) is that you can extend the working life of an airbag simply by cleaning and giving it a good spray with a protectant such as 303.... Does this stuff work, well try it on your wiper blades (spray them while in a bag and let them soak) - it may take you some time to figure how well it works.

I just took my bags out on the weekend, super easy.

Only extra tool I needed was a tap/die set for the lower mount bolts. I snipped the line to the air bag to get them out the way easier, I was not fussed about saving any thing to do with that.

I went with the Dobinson's heavy duty coils as part of the kit, including shocks. However the shocks are not going to work for me, they have no travel in them for the rear end will hardly flex so I will be trying to find a better solution.
