Probably bad contacts in the starter solenoid.....well known fault. For Land Rover Discovery Defender TD5 2.5 Diesel Starter Motor Repair Fix Kit AU | eBay
May be lucky, try shorting starter main lead to the solenoid spade terminal!
.... or the the spade connector off the side of the starter could be loose or dirty, and just touching it may get a better contact and you get starter action again.

And Torqueflights. I could tow start my old S series Valiant that I had some 47 years ago.
Wish I still had it

There is an episode or is it the film of I Love Lucy, where a car won't start and the driver says you have to push it up to 30 mph so that the auto can start the engine. Lucy then proceeds to drive her car with the intent of hitting the other one at 30 mph!

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

One pro'ly wouldn't be able to push start a D2 auto, but you might be able to tow start it, the aforementioned 30mph or 50kmh sounds about right as a minimum for high range, or maybe push start it down a steep hill in low range. I'm only saying this as I have tried the steep hill trick on my D3, never gave it a try in my D2.

You can tow it to 100 and it still wont start. As has been stated, if the auto does not have a rear pump it is impossible.
And ZF's don't have one. The auto's that do, the pump is driven off the output shaft.
When sufficient speed is achieved, around 50 kph, enough pressure is generated to allow the clutch plates to engage and the torque convertor to spin the engine.
