Vibration damper, I believe.
Please excuse my ignorance posting here, as this is my second post to date.
Hope someone might be able to assist me with this? I have a 1999 Discovery 2 TD5, which has this strange attachment to the rear differential and I have no idea of its purpose, never seen anything like this before. Can anyone assist??
Sorry if the post appears disjointed, never uploaded a pic before.

I think it is meant to be a vibration dampner. Ironically mine vibrated and snapped off, it hasn't been on for a years and years.

I was told it's a vibration damper, fitted in the factory as needed, I've had one with none, a couple with two (one each end) and I think my current disco only has one on the rear, you can try taking it off and see what happens, sometimes they are fine, sometimes you will want to put it straight back on!
