    TD5 FPR Filter / Alternatives or Reasonably Priced Source

    Changing the head over in the TD5 and found neither the old or new head had the inline filter

    Has any one sourced reasonably priced - they want nearly $200 for a new one and MORE - or found an alternative product that will fit. Maybe just stuffed gauze down the hole LOL


    Or just not used one and problems encountered... Is this really just a surety if travelling into areas which may use different additives in fuel or fuels such as cooking oil. Sure any protection is better but IS IT REALLY necessary

    One of the more interesting things I have found, is that there appears few other engines use such a filter in this way

    Yes it is necessary!

    This the last protection your injectors have.

    From my understanding of the fuel system, the normal fuel filter is fed by the low pressure pump in the fuel pump and then is returned to the swirl pot for
    the high pressure pump. High pressure pump then sends the clean fuel then to FPR.

    Check Island 4x4 in the UK. Part No; MAE 100 010. 55 quid, so about A$100 + freight.
    You've probably already spent more on this vehicle than most of the rest of our D2 TD5s are worth. This is not the part to be skimping on.

    Edit:- That will be a Britpart replacement, for genuine see below...

    You've probably already spent more on this vehicle than most of the rest of our D2 TD5s are worth. This is not the part to be skimping on.

    Thanks' for that. Sort of struck me that other diesel engines don't seem to have this at the coal face so to speak as to if it is just there for a bit of Irish protection, to be sure to be sure.

    Do accept your point re the investment made so far but luckily have also had nearly 2 years to get these parts together so have been able to find some great bargains along the way at considerable savings over retail, did have a budget back at Christmas of $8k only and while I have gone over it, got this D2 for $1400 (in much better condition than ever would have anticipated so very lucky that way) so am sitting on the insured worth (just under $10K) give or take a couple of $K. Helps of course to do it your self rather than getting it done at dealers!!!

    Still think that the investment in the D2 when considered against other 4WD's such as 80 series etc. is at considerable savings for the quality of vehicle against what should be a great (and comfortable) off roader. Think the point I am trying to make is that even if the all up cost was $20K (for me not) it is a bargain and really, axles, diffs, lifts and a VNT for a $8-10K D2 gets you under this.

    But I hate being ripped off for such a small part that couldn't cost more than $1 to make, hubs with all the fruit connected are about the same price!

    Yep, I certainly don't think you've 'over invested' working on those figures.

    I'm in the same boat after 16 1/2 years of D2 ownership. If you add up the total ownership cost over those years I don't believe I could have done it cheaper with
    a 80/100 series LC. Have had a Hilux and LC BJ73 in the past and while they were both very reliable vehicles, there is something about the comfort, safety
    and 'driveability' of the D2.

    I can't wait to see a video of your D2 in action after the rebuild.

    How many Kw's are you heading for after the rebuild?

    Anyway, still worth the cost of this little filter at the end of the day.
    Only takes a tiny piece of grit to get in an injector to stop them dead. Don't ask how I know this....

    Not actually after specifying Kw's just torque of which I have the desire of 400 Nm at 2000rpm.I am lead to believe this is eminently possible, more than this would just be extra cream. Suppose made the choice to go this way supplementing it with the 4.37 diff ratio for what I perceive the best compromise for off roading and copping an extra 200 rpm at 100kph cruising with 32" tyres.


    By my reckoning this would be relatively unstressed for both the engine and more so the auto. Talking budget and a rebuild of the Auto and transfer box both with Ashcroft internals (1.1 would solve the 2oorpms)would nearly double the investment, be great no doubt (especially central ATB which as a long term Audi quattro driver with a love for torsen centres) but a cheque too far! Have no desire to remove either from the D2 myself but have a very reasonable quote to replace the Torque Convertor once the engine is up and running.

    That style of filter is also used in all the Toyota diesels. And in them it gets quite a workout.

    Know of several that failed to proceed when it blocked up.

    have you tried LR dealer. I've often found them to be well priced for parts.

    Have never thought to go to a dealer, but maybe they may be a fair bit cheaper, yet to hear back from the Poms re postage, so Monday morning will look up a dealer... g

    Opened the pack for the new Bosch FPR after removing the old one and found a surprising present.

    The FPR has a filter on it, very fine mesh too, wondered then would if it fit with the filter, hard push and it did. Think I will forget getting the filter in head and buy myself 4 slabs of beer. Thanks all for your inputs.

    By the way, finally got the quote on this for freight, if you can call it freight on about 10 grams of metal - 26 GBP, yep $50 Aus dollars for a letter, Think they may have been the same company wanting a similar amount on 8 clips for the SLS airbags, but that may have been 11 grams - when will I learn....
