    VNT's and Snorkels

As anyone who has a VNT or researched them will understand, it appears that there disclaimers as to the use of snorkels which could potentially void warranty's

    Re warranty,
Td5 VGT uprated turbocharger - AlliSport
    the gumph has this
Non-restrictive intake system – we advise against the use of a raised or nonstandard air intake. Please note – any restriction to the air intake on performance turbos will invalidate warranty. This can include raised air intakes.

TD5 VGT Uprated Turbocharger Road and Off Road - Bell Auto Services, BAS Remaps, Independent Land Rover Specialist In York , Service, Repairs, Custom Remaps York, Performance upgrades, BAS Landrover tuning.

We also do not advise fitting with snorkels or restricted air intakes.

    Having asked my supplier Darkside Developments as to this and impact on warranty they replied;

"I think they are being super cautious with these statements.

We expect this kit is likely to be run with modified intake so it has no impact on the warranty and it's unlikely to be the sole cause of any turbo failure. "

Which seems perfectly reasonable and sensible even, do not think we put VNT's on to drag strip D2's.

Had in my early days preparing for the 'D2 rebuild' purchased a cheapo snorkel, under whelming as to the quality and size of the pipe. Just got a second hand Safari snorkel which was to use with the D2a (not much in the way of modification) and this is certainly better, reasonable even. As time has been sucked out of this year and the rebuild of the D2 taken far longer than anticipated have put off the bespoke snorkel till probably next year and am now contemplating using the Safari as a stop gap.

Any holes and cut throughs will well and truly be in the cut outs of a 4" snorkel along the fender.

Having read many threads now on the fitting and even finding a template for the fitting itself, 999 did a wonderful tutorial - Discovery2 Safari Snorkel Install - on fitting and gave some data as to the relative flows, however the data was not easy to correlate across the rev range etc. The highs for the airflow were sans snorkel 610.7 and with Safari 610.4 indicating that the V Max was not hindered by using a safari snorkel at least.

But, always the but, was looking to increase V Max not just maintain it and wondering whether the Safari will allow greater volume as required by the VNT or is the above scenario the max of it. How have people with a VNT found the use of a Safari with VNT or have they had to go larger to find the increase.??

Might as well get rid of the air filter and MAF sensor as well

    Agreed...that would also improve performance!

The difference would make it hard to justify though.

I wouldn't worry too much about intake setups, unless you have a very cheap nasty one.

One of the benefits of the snorkel is that its sucking in slightly cooler air, and hopefully cleaner as well.

My testing would show that without a snorkel you can flow enough air for just over 200hp.

I doubt it's much different with one bit haven't got time to check at present.

Of course the greater the difference between ambient and airbox pressure, the harder the turbo has to spin.

That will create heat and lead to premature turbo failure if significant enough.

    Cheers

I have 4inch snorkle into a custom airbox and the alive gtb550 turbo, which the current tune is on 550nm and 250hp and it pulls alot of air in and no issues with restrictions

So what's ya 1/4 mile time?

I reckon mine could crack into the high 40s'

Was just taking a break from reading about VNTs' actually. Ahh, the things I can only dream about...

Not that we want to encourage reckless driving...

But I would have thought sub 10 seconds for 0-100 and sub 14.5-15 for the quarter.

    In controlled circumstances etc.

    Cheers
