After charging and resting battery 12.9v, turn ignition to II and drops to 12.6 steady. Still no murmer from the fuel pump. Had another play with the Nanocom but the main answer is Error.....etc. Will not even display battery condition. Playing around I did find a window that said ECU robust. Could not get the Nanocom to run any tests. Injector loom ordered. Given up on what else to try until it gets here.

Its most likely one of 3 things.

    1. Ecu plug is dislodged, but you have been in there a few times by the look of it, so not that.

    2. Ecu has died, not that likely but certainly possible.

    3. Fuse or relay, most likely this, I'd put money on one of them (not my money of course!)-- if it has been intermittent...relay, but I'm leaning towards fuse under steering wheel.

No start and red coolant light on is prime example of no power at ecu.

It won't be the injector loom, although that probably needs doing anyway.

    Cheers
    James

Thanks James. I have a dark feeling that the new loom is not going to get her going.
Tomorrow I will go through the fuses.
The Namnocom did give me a fault code today (from the transmission, I think):
    P1843 Can timeout monitoring.
I have ggogled the code and it is leaning towards a dead ECU I believe.
One thing I have noticed is that it is dead quiet under the bonnet, no very quiet ticking in the ABS block.

Check the fuse box under the steering wheel, from memory a 10 amp fuse.... but my memory ain't what it was!
The code you quoted could simply be the engine ecu not responding, which of course it won't if it's got no power.

Checked out the fuses, both boxes, and then found Main Circuit Relay (R8?) was clicking but not completing the circuit. Swapped it for a good one and hey presto! Fuel pump whirring! This morning got a replacement relay and the old girl fired up straight away.
Thanks Brains Trust for all the hints and advice. I would still be floundering without you. Also to Heather and Mario who sent the bits I needed pronto.
Just waiting now on the new injector harness and we'll be rolling again I hope.
Just a mystery why the relay failed when it did. She runs so quiet now I reckon that idler bearing had been on the way out for a while. My bad, not locating the source of the noise.

Glad to hear it! it's frustrating sometimes with electrical problems, but if you sit down and go through it all logically, you can often nut it out.

Glad to report we are back on the road with a lovely quiet motor (no squealing bearing) I will have to get used to. No accessories but I'll just have to get back in the fuse box.
Thanks to all for following this saga and being generous with advice.
    Cheers,

We've been back on the road for a while now just taking the dogs down the beach with no wipers, accessories, radio but now the lights won't come on so today I took out the fuse box under the dash. The clock still works and the radio comes on intermittently but shuts off if I try the wipers. An odd combination of faults. I did suspect those pesky little ants which have been a nuisance but the fuse box is clear. Is there any way of testing out the fuse board or should I just replace it, hoping it will fix everything? Plenty of second hand ones on eBay but wots the chance I'd get a dud? Thanks people.

Well, Bazzle318 came to the rescue with a second hand fuse box. (Thank you Aus Post, arrived next day) and some suggetions for fuse double- checking. Swapped the fuse box over hoping for a difference but everything the same. Baz suggested replacing a few fuses which I have done. I check the fuses with a multimeter across the contacts on the fuse top so there should be no doubt. At a loss what to do next. Hardest part of changing the fuse box was trying to wrangle it back into its proper position. There is a relay I think under the dash somewhere that sometimes clicks when I operate the wipers. Owing to age induced inflexibility have been unable to locate it. Even harder now as it is no longer clicking.
