    Gunk in coolant reservoir

    Hi all.

    Everyday's an adventure. :-)

Today, I found gunk in my coolant reservoir. Decided to check coolant, as my Madman's been showing very low temperatures (~65 C) and not really heating up much more. Not sure if that's related to the stuff in the reservoir, though.

Any ideas if this is oil or something else?

That looks like either casting sand or silicates dropping out of suspension in the coolant itself.

How long since it was flushed/changed?

    Hi Tombie.

Thanks for the response. I had a leak when I bought the car and pretty much lost most of the coolant. So flushed, to a degree I suppose. :-)

Other than that, haven't actually done a flush proper.

What could cause it drop out of suspension?

When was the last time you sacrificed a virgin or Toyota to the Land Rover gods of mischief?

Even a goat or chicken to the Lucas gods of smoke would help.

Jokes aside, I have a similar issue in my D1. I believe it can come from using tap water with a coolant mix. As there are lots of trace minerals on tap water, they can get together and form blockages etc.

Sometimes ownership does have that "feel" to it!

I put some stop leak stuff in there some time back. I wonder if that could be related.

Anyway, drained it from bottom plug, cleaned out reservoir and filled with new coolant. Hopefully all good now!

If you didn't flush it soon after I'd say thats it.

I think the idea with those stop leaks is to use it for a short while, flush and use again .. or something similar to that sort of routine.

here's a couple of pics of what 'stop leak' end up looking like in your cooling system.

Obviously they stop leaks .. and primarily because they stop flow all together!

You can see the small stone like grains and blobs in the less affected tubes of the upper part of the radiator.

They should change the name of that stuff from stop leak to stop cooling
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
