On my olde '95 D1facelift I replaced the "high" tail light assys (from a D2 I think) & used those + the original Bumper type for the blinkers. No-one ever ran up my arris. & comforting to know that even if one bulb let go there was always a "spare" operating. Never had a problem with overloading the relay either them being in parallel.

Like V8Ian .. I've found that most LEDs use about 1/3rd the current of most incandescent bulbs .. usually the higher the power draw, the smaller the percentage that the equivalent LED will use.

As the reverse lights are 21w, total 42w, ie. about 4amp .. I'd say if you try a pair of LEDs and they rate at something like 1 amp total .. could be similar to using the relay/triggering method.

Ideally you'd want to sort the XYZ switch properly .. but maybe a pair of LEDs could buy the OP a bit more time to sort it, and ultimately lower the load through the XYZ switch in future without resorting to using a relay.

I've got LEDs in my D1 and D2 .. so much brighter too.

I was thinking the same thing myself, I have got a pair of led globes, are they still globes if they are led, so will try that tomorrow, looks like I'm up for either a new xyz or a repair.

Does anyone know how long the repair takes, the car is my daily so can't afford to have it off the road.

Always remember that LEDs are usually polarity sensitive, so need to be installed the right way around.
If they don't work on first install, remove turn 180° and try again.

Some higher led bulbs are 'reversible' in that they can be fitted either way.
As I understand, they use a bridge rectifier in the electrickery department inside the bulb which allows them to be installed either way.

Anyhow .. I was delusional in my comment about them anyhow.
Reverse globe bulbs for D2 are the standard BA15S type, which from memory is pos in the centre and earth on the main body of the bulb .. so won't be an issue.

Had a go at putting the led reverse lights on, no joy, the test meter says there is no voltage at all to the light fitting, if the reverse is displaying on the dash should there be something or is it a completely separate circuit?

Full disclosed, I'm trying this with the ignition on but engine off, would having the engine running make a difference?
