Xyz switch, just confirming before I commit

    Hello people,

Found out today that the reverse lights have stopped working, the people in woolies car park were very nice about it, did a bit of Internet research, bulbs are good but no power to the holder.

Dash display knows when it's in reverse

Put the wipers on, stick it in reverse, the rear wiper does not come on.

Would I be right in thinking I'm up for a new xyz switch, just want to check before I commit, it's an expensive item and from what I've read, there is no point going cheap.

Would led bulbs help keep the load down on the new one?

Thanks, as always, for any help.

Interesting.. haven’t seen that before, but if you end up needing a new XYZ switch you can DIY refurb it reliably by removing, carefully drill out rivets, give it a good clean and check contacts alignment, then lube the contacts with dielectric grease, reassemble with bolts in place of rivets then reinstall.

    Cheers

If the dash is saying "R", then it isn't a problem with the XYZ switch. I would bet it is a fuse.

In the cabin, under the dash remove and check the fuses:

    F18 - Rear wiper motor
    F25 - Reverse lights

To be honest, they do all sorts of weird things, like if you blow a brake light on one of the sides it will illuminate the CDL light or something weird, and on it goes.

Sounds a bit weird, in that I assumed that the BCU would initiate the dash indicator that you are in reverse.
But it appears that it does turn on the rear wiper when the wipers are on, when you select reverse.

anyhow, the common link from the trans electrics to the BCU and globes is a 20 pin connector under the drivers access panel to the fuse box.
If you have a copy of RAVE's electrical diagrams, the connector itself is marked C0295. This connector looks like to be the closes one to the fuse box itself, in the myriad of connectors down there.
So if you don't have easy access to RAVE, the 20 pin connector has 4 wires in one of the corners of it all green with a brown tracer. To ID this connector more easily it will have 7 purple wires in the nearest corner to the green/brown wires too.
The wire that sends power to the BCU and globes is the corner most pin. this is PIN 1 of the 20pin connector. The corner most pin with purple wires is PIN 20 of this connector.

If you have power at this PIN 1 wire with reverse selected, then maybe the connector has issues at the 3rd or 4th wires from the corner(reminder they should all be green/brown too).
Note about these first 4 pins at this connector: it may turn out that PIN2 on this connector is empty. RAVE is a bit vague about this. It shows PIN 2 as green/brown in the connector section, but no wire there in the wiring diagram.
So if you have PINs 1, 3 and 4 with green/brown wires, I think this may be normal.

And don't be surprised that it may be two blown fuses or a collection of blown devices that just seemed to happen at the same time.
That is, like Slunnie suggested check fuses if you haven't already. Does the rear wiper work via the dash switch?

One question too ... can you start the car whilst still in reverse?

LED bulbs should reduce current through the wires, for sure, and also give a much brighter output in dark conditions.
Just about every LED equivalent bulb I've tested so far in my vehicles will require half, or less, current to run them ... usually 1/3 as much.

    FLASHING M & S LIGHTS

Most common indication that the XYZ switch is on the blink is that the green M & S flash on the dash along with the gear indicator in the LCD display. This only allows reverse and if I remember rightly 3rd gear with no lock up. Needless to say that take off with a standard D2 is a little bit tardy.

Know if the D2 hasn't been started for a while, these will flash so just leave it on for a minute, restart and then they are gone, XYZ is a bit temperamental to voltage.

Could be the brake switch under the brake pedal, does all sorts of strange things when faulty. easy and cheap to replace.

Thanks for all the replies, and sorry for the slow reaction, time is a bit tight over the week.

Rear wiper works on the switch and all the fuses seem to be alright, let's face it, it's fairly obvious if they have blown!

This is my daily drive so there is no problem with it sitting and battery meter gives a good 12.4v before starting and 14.4v when running and charging, obviously goes down a bit once the battery is full.

Brake lights are working as they should but is there any other way of testing the switch to see if its on the way or and could be the problem?

Will try to get a test meter onto the wiring over the weekend as that looks like the next step.

Any and all help and suggestions gratefully received
