When looking for leak related noises, I use a length of 1/4" vinyl tube a bit like a stethoscope to refine the location. I have a decent mechanics stethoscope also, but haven't seen them for sale for years and they don't help with pressure related noises (like manifold or vacuum leaks).

Sounds like lifters to me or bent push rods.

I reckon so too Philip. After I put new head gaskets in mine I didn't tighten the exhaust manifold bolts enough and the result was a blown out gasket. Sounded the same. From memory the gasket is in 2 sections, front and rear. Easy and cheap to replace. Not deep enough to be big end and big end would be unusual. Doubt your tappets would have worn so quickly. If it came on quite suddenly then that points to exhaust manifold gasket. Cheers

I'm with Discorevy on this as well, I think if you pull the leads one at a time the problem will become manifest, and it's really easy to do.

    Cheers

That will sort out which cylinder but it is a good place to start. Atm, he doesn't know which way to turn.

Sounds like a lifter is failing, or initially a timing chain tensioner, but then lifter, tapping away. Definitely top end of engine. Diesel injectors have from time to time been known to make a similar noise. If their faulty

I suspect the Flex plate .

I suspect the flex plate but be wary of replacing with a HD unit as mine tore off the the TC making it unserviceable. Not LR fault but my missus changing to forward whilst reversing down our steep drive way.

I replaced the bottom end on an A30 from underneath years ago but its a huge risk as I found out. Don't do it.
As for the sound, from my experience you'll need a stethoscope to pinpoint the source although any noise tends to ricochet around inside the block. Maybe try just a piece of garden hose and go right around the outside of the engine (being careful to avoid the fan).
I doubt its a bottom end because the sound will rise and fall depending on the load on the engine, possibly a con-rod but its usually much harder to hear. To be honest my gut tells me its the crankshaft pulley - the key and overall fit has to be 100%, absolutely no looseness at all otherwise it clatters like mad. Maybe try running it for 10 seconds with the fan belt removed - if its a loose pulley you'll notice straight away.
    Keep us posted.
