A piston is not that hard to source, I think your engine rebuilder had a slack attack.
Get all the dimensions, including gudgeon height, and try the following.

Mick Cashell Engines & Parts - Located in ASCOT (QLD): Car Accessories - Retail - AussieWeb Local Search

Australia's largest wholesalers of Engine Parts

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

What would be the likely cause of this damage?

At a guess overheat possible but more likely some missed oil changes (unless the OP has had it since new and did the changes). Cheers

A lot of businesses in Brisbane are currently closed, due to flooding.

Maybe the old Street Front Premises in Queensland in future may need to be on the 14th floor & customers could call in by boat?

"Ahoy there Repco, I need a fan belt for my Rover" "REPCO. " We can help, just tie up over there by by the ceiling fan & watch out for those Sharks. The buggers have been milling around since they spotted the new Lunch Buoy? I'll paddle over in a minute, grab a coffee."

In 2011 there was a shark swimming around, inside the butcher's shop at Goodna.

It must have been a tad confused or bloody hungry? Shirley it would have known it should have been in the Fish Shop down the road a chain?
