Winches are rated at their highest rate of pull eg when pulling on the first wrap of rope..Quote:

When I was looking at the winch I wanted I rang ARB and asked if the 20,000 pound would fit. They said no only the 10,000.
After a bit of research it turns out the 10,000 and 12,000 are identical in size.
Turns out as tombie said, the bar is not rated to 12,000. I got a 12,000 anyway.
And even if you get a 10,000 and do a double line pull and if you were on the last row of the drum you effectively have a 20,000 pound pull.
The D2 weighs in at about 4500lb and the ARB bar is rated for 9500lb.Quote:

Winching a D2 out of mud can easily need more than 9500lb of effort.
