Recently we did a 15k km trip towing a 2 tonne camper in our D2 Td5 auto and got a tad under 13l/100km. Pretty happy with that.

We don’t need because we save on maintenance costs. I admit distances between fill ups is a downside. Planning is essential on trips. Cheers

    I just did 3200k towing an 8 X 5 high sided trailer. 3700kg combined weight. 15.5L per 100.

Would love to know how you guys are getting such good figures. I'd normally get 9l per 100 sans trailer

Don't forget many are running different size non stock tyre sizes and many consumption figures could be 10% out.

Around 10.5 per hundred empty is very good for an auto, manuals slightly better.

If you put 2 tonnes on the back you are going to be 13.5-16 per hundred... It's simply a matter of physics, no one can change that

82 km/hr should be the most economical... for fuel anyway, maybe not for time!

Maybe, but $/km isn’t that much different between petrol and diesel. And we get to enjoy the noise with the window wound down.

23l per 100km in my D2a towing a 1.5t boat with an exhaust noise that was quite frankly pathetic compaired to the 79 series the wife was driving towing a 3t van at 15l per 100km with an exhaust note through the 4" stainless exhaust which is amazing.
The 79 series was towing twice as much as the D2a and using 8l less per 100km with "Ear Candy" to boot

IF I ever get another D2 it will be a TD5 for certain.

Towing 1.5t at 23l/100km sounds a bit high even for a V8. You might want to take some driving tips from the missus. Good economy towing my Coromal 505Pioneer XC
My point is that the difference in fuel costs between diesel and petrol is quickly closing the gap.

The price is pretty volotile,so who knows what will happen in the future.
Here both are very similar in price ATM,at most garages.

But Diesel vehicles are generally more expensive to service, and engine repairs more costly.
And the days of diesel engines lasting much longer than petrol engines is long gone.

    Some diesels vs some petrols.
A LR petrol is unlikely to pass 200kk without major work including a new cam , lifters, timing chain, valve seals , and head shaving.
A TD5 if kept cool can do 500 kk without much work, although a head gasket can go.
many specialists think TD 5 is the best engine LR made .

Don’ t ask about the V6 s or Ingeniums though.
