Duckbill valve in D2 Td5 fuel filter head - necessary?

Hi - I have a 99 D2 Td5. Thought I'd check the condition of the duckbill valve in the blue-covered line to fuel filter head...and there wasn't one. I've heard that some vehicles don't have them but presumably they have a purpose if most vehicles do have them. I've had the Disco for 15 years and never had starting problems, which is apparently a symptom of a faulty duckbill valve. The Disco runs well, although you really have to push it to get it past 3000rpm, but doubt this would have anything to do with a missing duckbill valve... Thoughts?
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l
    93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...
    99 Td5 Disco ACE...nice drive...hopefully reliable...

Hi, i dont know the colour of the line where it is but the only compulsory valve there is the air bleed valve(WJN500110) which is in the rear wheel side port of the filter head, the "duckbill" valve which is called "non-return valve" or some other ways too(DA3950) was not fitted on early modells and it was fitted in dfferenet places for D2s and Defenders so IMO it has not much effect anyway so if that's the one concerning you better forget about it.
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
