They don't tend to go out of adjustment by themselves, but obviously if things have been moved by someone, then it's possible.

If "P" and "1" correlate between the shifter and the dash readout then everything else should.

If this is the case then there should be no blanks on the screen between gears as there should be constant contact.

Having said that, they can still function if there is the occasional tiny loss of contact, without triggering the fault

That was the point of my question. There isn't a whole lot of scope for adjustment but it's a little tricky sometimes getting it right on your own.

I realise this a little off the topic at hand. it was more for my education.

Thanks to all for their thoughts and advice. I’ll try some of these suggestions to see if I can work out what the issue is. If I need to source an xyz switch, any ideas about the best supplier?

Dunno about "best". Ashcroft's in the UK used to have them but I can't see one on their site. This mob in Melbourne: Land Rover Parts - SWITCH - INHIBITOR - L/R DISC 2

The forum you are on is actually a great resource for finding things out. One thing that's nearly as certain as death and taxes is that someone will have had your problem before. Scroll to the bottom and read on:

    Or, as I suggested

Rebuild D2 ZF Selector Switch UHB100190

If you hunt around you might find a secondhand switch to rebuild so you don't need to have the car off the road.

Oh yeah, if it IS the switch then there's a thread or two about relocating the A/C drain.......

    Good luck with it.

My local Landrover specialist rebuilt the XYZ switch for a reasonable price.

Really firmed up the gearshift movement.

They recycle D2's as well so possible they could rebuild one for you.

Must have done something else while they were at it. XYZ switch alone shouldn't do that on its own. It just piggybacks on the selector shaft.

Thanks for the info on Autofarm, hadn't heard of them.
