I think it’s just a drain hole that you put the wading plug into if doing water crossings.
I’m not sure about the D2 but, on earlier cars, there was a nearby threaded hole for the wading plug to be stored.
Hello fellow home mechanics, was under my non-working 2002 D2 td5 yesterday and found this bolthole squirted some brake cleaner in and had oil drip out. Should I be worried?

In a D2 TD5 it is the hole for the timing pin AFAIR.
