Td5 Overheating - your thoughts...

Pulled the water pump today - tedious.

I thought these pics were interesting. Impellers looked brand new which was unexpected.

However the drive side looks like it has failed in the dogs. Its like they've shattered.

A question for the learned... is the old pump a genuine pump or aftermarket? It doesn't look genuine based on the pictures I've seen of them.

My other concern relates to the new one which isn't genuine. I saw a picture of another failed pump where the dog has spun on the axle and seperated. I'm looking at this one and thinking the drive dog looks like it has just been pressed onto the axle and driven via splines, and so potentially susceptable to the same failure. Any thoughts, as I'm half inclined to find a genuine pump so that I just don't have to worry about it while touring a long way from home.

Mate you do not have to do all that.
If you start at the front it is much simpler.
If you are changing the bracket to block(hidden) o ring you have to remove the bracket anyway.
First you remove and move aside the aircon compressor
Next remove the belt. (whoops loosen the 3 bolts on the power steering pulley first)
Next remove the power steering pump and put aside. No need to drain or anything . held by a few bolts.
This will give access to the bolts inside holding the bracket to the block.
Undo the bolts at the back of the bracket. you may need a 3/8 drive socket with a wobble extension for the middle bolt.
remove bracket complete with water pump.
Of course you have already removed the hoses.
Simple as that.
remember to replace the "o" ring which is actually square from the bracket to block.

Maybe the reason those impeller blades look so new is because they have been having a rest due to not spinning...

Wouldn't have a clue if either of them is genuine.

That's the way the mechanic does it also and then changes the pump on the bench. He said people do it either way.

I had to go one way or the other and just followed the guide and RAVE.

They're pretty crazy, they don't seem to make much heat. I've had the radiator all full of mud and it didn't overheat either.

I'm assuming the pump has only just broken though.

Only time mine has ever got hot was when I first discovered they had used plastic dowells to locate the cylinder head:bat:

My TDi, on the other hand.... Actually, I shouldn't knock it. It's problems came from me incorrectly bleeding the system.

I wouldn't expect to see any wear on the steel impellor blades and the splined press fitted impellor looks fine to me. However in what condition are the other dogs and does the old pump's shaft spin freely?

Actually, the “O” ring between the bracket and the engine block is circular, not square.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...55393ea1db.jpg
