V8 auto behind TD5 will it need a tune??

Hi all, following on from a previous post, my auto has let go and I now have a V8 replacement that will be freshened up before fitting (also changing over bell housing and output shaft) I am planning on fitting the V8 torque converter while I'm at it. According to Ashcroft's they say a tune will be needed, this is something I am planning on getting down the track but currently I just want to get the D2a back on its feet again. Can I get away without getting a tune for a while? I have been told it will be soggy down low, that's fine as it's mainly an airport runner for the moment or should I hit up Shack and get the trans ECU tuned?

    Cheers

    Hi Redd

You'll need to use the TD5 extension housing as well.

You will be able to drive it and yes, it will feel laggy with the stock tune but you can put up with it.

But it is more that you need an engine tune rather than the Trans Ecu to get rid of the doughiness.

Get Shack to do the Engine tune, and you'll wonder why you drove it standard for so long.

Together with the V8 converter, you will never sell it

Thanks for the reply discorevy, I hope so as at times I do question why I bought in the first place

Yep I forgot to mention the extension housing.. thankfully when I picked up the V8 trans the guy gave me a cooked TD5 one, now that I've started to pull mine out its done some serious damage.. cracked the output shaft (bolt on bit) and sheared off the extension housing (it came off with the transfer case!) thankfully the transfer case is fine and showing no damage of any sort (I have opened it up to check and everything turns surprisingly smoothly) but I will replace the seals to make sure, the rear main will also get replaced.

Once I've got it going again I'll touch base with Shack and see if he can work his magic

    cheers

Curious as to why you need a tune when the auto is controlled by the engine ECU so surely should shift exactly the same?

The auto is controlled by the TCU. The problem here though is the V8 converter and it's lower stall speed.

Auto is controlled by the Auto ECU, but certain info is shared via CanBus between the 2,

An engine ECU tune is desirable when fitting a V8 ( lower stall ) torque converter to overcome the lag present with the stock tune.

Shack also does the TCU tune for a different purpose on the 4hp 22/24's

Haha yep, all thanks to a "HD" front drive shaft who's cardan joint seemed like it was taking grease but was actually just spitting it out the side, nice blue heat marks in the joint where it seized up. Once I get everything sorted I'll post a photo of the damage

    Cheers

Yes TCU is in the ECU ie not on the valve body like later ZF boxes, stall speed will only affect take off so I assume the tune slows the upshift to cope with that.
