Certainly was a surprise I can assure you, lucky at the time I had the time to wait during the build for the replacement which was appreciably bigger, probably 30-50% in volume. The point you make seems plausible, but had not read of the difference anywhere prior.

Assume the P38 developed in house by LR rather than the D2 with BMW explains the difference in the choice of push on against screw on but seems strange that they didn't make both the same for stock purposes etc.

The P38 cooler I fitted was bigger...

Maybe the 4.0 was smaller as mentioned.

Interesting. I can only find one part number for the P38 cooler, ESR-2276. I wonder if Aus delivered cars were different. Or if some cars had already been modified prior to the cooler becoming available SH. Admittedly I only have the internet as a resource.

Maybe it was non-standard in the P38 also???

Slunnie it would appear you are right on the money, unsure why it does show not up in the stock code.

Looked up the sticker that I found on the cooler but the search did not seem to find anything, does show that it is at least made in England.

But what I did find when doing a search for pictures may have solved the mystery.

These two transmission coolers are identifiably different when you look at the pictures, the 4.0litre one is similar to the one that I got supplied initially and then the 4.0-4.6litre one which I assume was supplied to Australia from day one and not UK for the 4.0, so the one supplied was most probably an import vehicle from UK.

Ahhh, so the first one is an engine oil cooler and the second one is an ATF cooler?

I just looked on RAVE, and the Disco2 Engine oil and ATF coolers also look very similar.

Now going back I see that they have an original Engine Oil Cooler as well with the same size as the one I got as a automatic oil cooler!!!
