I was stupid enough to not heed my own advise a while ago.
I'd bought the new trans lines, and got busy doing other stuff and work, and then other stuff .. so new trans lines sitting pretty in the shed.
Then one day on the way to work, and ... psssssssttt ... smell of oil and no drive = swage at the passengers side let go, and I couldn't go anywhere.
Luckily I wasn't traveling fast(inner city), so shut down car fairly quickly and avoided a rebuild of the trans, which is quite recently rebuilt anyhow!

and FWIW, you may look at the pipes and think to yourself that they look in good condition, so there may be no rush to renew them, but this was my situation too.

Lucky one, Arthur. First time (!) mine let go I had the right foot sunk climbing a steep hill. It was a tad spectacular.

Maybe here's some comfort for 'ya:
A few years ago, I was coming back down the Hume near Seymour. I don't usually drive fast. I definitely don't drive 'carefully' but speed isn't really my cuppa tea.
So, I'm sitting at maybe 95ish sometimes creep up to 100, but just keep in mind not to slow down the trucks if they come up behind me.

A flash new Prado comes whizzing by, I'd say they were doing min 120 or so... for sure more than 110.
He was gone far into the distance in quick time. maybe a couple of mins later, and Prado was hard to see in the distance, massive clouds of smoke could be seen in the far distance.
As I came up to it, looked like bushfire smoke maybe .. couldn't be sure. As all cars HAD to drive into and through it, it became apparent from the smell it was oily smoke. stunk like crazy, made me feel sick.

Turned out speed racer in their Prado had smoked their motor(maybe tans) .. who knows, smoke so thick belching out the back, couldn't see if it were from exhaust or just the rear of the car.
It was actually fully inconsiderate that idiot didn't pull up at least to check their car, but more so for the sake that approaching cars could hardly se through their James Bond smoke screen.

Weird thing about this particular scene was that another time later, I saw a Prado, Melb bound, very near the same area billowing smoke as I was northbound on the freeway too.

Whats the chances you see two same/similar type vehicles with similar issues in the same area.

When my trans line let go, I had plenty of time to contemplate what happened and why .. etc.
Whilst waiting for the RACV truck, I walked back along the road I came from .. maybe klm or so, but there was the hard to see, but still visible breadcrumb that the trans left behind on the road. It was leaking for some time(about 3 or so klms at least) .. but definitely not on the way to there(other side of the road).
(I was taking missus to work and then heading off to work myself, so same route down and then back) ..
I've been a driver all my working life(except for some silly time when not), and you pick up habits, and one of them is regular(maybe 10 or 15sec) rear view checks. Can't help it, just a 30 year habit I s'pose .. but for sure no smoke billowing before full stoppage happened.


For the OPs' benefit, the trans line failures are a common fault on this era Disco, and you will read about many instances of it happening, but it's not a recurring issue. It's just an age related issue of the trans lines.
That is, for your peace of mind, once you have renewed them they will give many years of untroubled service again. If you expect to keep the D2 for another 20 years, maybe then you may have to consider renewing them again.

Map the ECU and then map the trans ECU(TCU) and install an additional trans cooler, and because you're already half way there, renew the trans lines. Talk to Shack about mapping the computery parts.
If you have read up on the topic already, you may have also read that one of the lines fittings at the trans is a total pain to get too.
I did mine without removing the XYZ switch from the trans, I guess I'm stupidly lazy .. but if I were to ever do one again, for sure remove it to get to that top fitting.

trans lines seem to be sus after 14 years min let go and toasted the trans, very expensive 1k for the tow back to brissie and then there was the over the top rebuild that cost a heap including the use of RR internals a torque converter from pommie land a lock switch for the converter pressure upgrade and valve body upgrade, big cooler and watchdog temp guage and alarm for eng and trans. a bit over 10k all up but the disco drives so much better and with the converter locked on the highway drops about 200rpm for the same speed. had the work done by MR Automotive and Ron Hill Automatics very happy camper, Also remapped the ecu and got a bigger intercooler. Long story short new hoses are cheap insurance

Sorry to hijack the thread for a moment, but you raise an interesting point.
Re the lock switch, does anyone know if this is similar to the manual override lock-up switch design from Wholesale Automatics in Melbourne?
One of the local (WA) transmission repair firms warned me off using the system for a D2, saying that they refuse to fit them, but would not expand if that was for concerns of misuse, or that it would bugger the auto transmission in any event.
My 4HP24 does a lot of travel on 70 kmph roads, which is where the lockup would be nice to have without having to speed up to 80 to engage lockup - and then losing it if dropping below 70.

And yes I am aware of and watching with considerable interest the current D2 v8 torque converter thread by Shack and others.

The V8 torque converter has tamed my silly rubber band wind up vehicle a bit and I would recommend it as a must have upgrade.

The shift points don't change though so Shack it is for that side of things. Having said that the lower slippage of the V8 converter keeps me within about 300 rpm higher than the locked speed at 80 km/h and I can almost live with it, but still end up speeding up a bit to get it to lock, but read on.

On both the early Td5 trans controller which supposedly has to go to 83 to lock up and the later one which locks up at 80 I found that the nanocom speed shows both locking at 80 (my speedo shows about 83 for both early and late which is why I plugged nano in), however my seat of accelerator pedal feel tells me I have to be more gentle and feather it a bit b4 the early unit will change at 80 whereas the later unit will lock at 80 while still accelerating lightly. Your mileages may be different on that one dear readers, but definately surprising to see the early one can lock at 80 too.
