Discovery 2 TD5 Auto - Possible Transmission issue

Hello Land Rover enthusiasts,

I am having an issue currently with my 2001 Disco 2 TD5 Auto.

The other day i was driving home from work with no issues at all. Once home, i was going for a short drive for dinner. In this time, I noticed that there was a jerk/harsh gear change. Mainly between 1st and 2nd gear.
There was also a slight clunking noise.

I have also noticed that the car seems to have lost some of its up and go power, the engine sounds and goes normal but just doesn't pick up like it used to.

I have changed the oil and ensured that it was at correct level. The old oil was dark and smelt burnt.

Today, when i first started the car. No issues, apart from the above. When i reached destination and turned car on to come home. I selected R and nothing happened, went to D and nothing happened. Eventually it clicked into gear and i was able to drive home.

I am completely lost on what to look for.

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Does the dash display read the same as the display on the selector?
If not maybe loose connector down on cable.

Did you take the sump of the transmission off and replace the filter?
If not then the filter may be blocked with debris dislodged in your oil change.

Did you go through the sequence of starting engine then running through gears while topping up oil?
If not then you may have low oil level. This sounds most likely.

If all of these check out time for a new transmission.

Was the oil dark and burnt? If so skip the first three.

You could try the oil and filter change again but It will probably just keep it driveable until you can replace the Transmission / torque converter .
sounds like the damage is already done unfortunately.

Well dunno.
I have a friend who has a D2 with 400KK plus on it who asked me if he should change the transmission oil.
How long ?
Not since I bought the car.
How many Ks .? at least 200KK!
i said oh geez, it's a risk that you will kill it.

He changed fluid and all well.
So there you go.

No I didn't change the filter, just the oil. However, this was changed about 2 services ago..

The dash shows the same gear as lever.

The oil did come out dark and burnt smelt, unfortunately.

Sometimes, the gear won't engage when selecting D or R. But sometimes it will first go. Likewise with the gear changes, sometimes they are smooth and normal. Sometimes it becomes harsh.

An oil change only changes the oil in the pan, ergo only a percentage of the capacity.

I know very little of autos on the mechanical side, but I'd be thinking maybe valve body? Or some crud in the valve body at least.

(Silly question). Where exactly is the valve body? and how would i check to see if anything is wrong with it?
