    Landrover Discovery Series 2 v8-4.0 2003 - Purchase Questions

    Hi all,

Chasing some advise on a car i'm looking to purchase, looking to buy an old'ish 2004 v8 4.0L disco series 2 with under 180,000ks on the clock and have a couple of questions about them.

    1. What is spare parts like and availability for this year/model in australia? is it pretty good for all the common failure stuff (bushes/sensors/radiator) and not to expensive?
    2. How does this engine stack up over time, any factor issues after certain mileage?
    3. Are there any known issues with this partcular model, engine/transmission/drive line?
    4. How are the eletronics in these cars of this age? anything major to look for/concerns?
    5. Should I be preferrencing a TD5 over this? though for the sub 10k for this model i'm looking atunder 180k would a diesel for the same price with 250k-300k be much better a better pick?

This wont be a daily drive, but purely for camping trips every 1-2 months and then a quick drive once a week to keep things moving. Not to worried about fuel usage.

    thanks heaps!

The V8 does sound good, but it's thirsty.

They slip liners but there are meant to be a couple of fixes for that if you spend the $$.

All running gear and general vehicle stuff is pretty similar or the same between the V8 and TD5.

The auto is slightly better in the V8 I believe, and usually last a bit longer.

TD5 is pretty slow stock but can be tuned, V8 can't really be helped much, but does go better than a stock TD5.

TD5 is good on fuel and it's pretty reliable.

Biggest issues would be head /head gaskets, leaky fuel pressure regulator and loose oil pump bolt, if you search for those problems on here you'll get plenty of info.

There are quite a few around so I believe it is a buyers market. I would have looked at a dozen before i got mine.

awesome thanks for the info, not to worried about the thirsty part of it.

When you mean slip liners, do you mean the hood lining?

I'll check out the other things you mentioned, re heads/oil pump bolt

Have a few " spare parts" in stock 😊 but have not found any major issues getting most things.

He means slipped cylinder liners. There isn't actually much of that in my view. What is common are head gasket issues (although if you get that and cook the motor you might get liner failure and the piston might pick it up...there are some liners that move and knock though) and I put that down mainly to the extra heat that these motors run compared to Disco 1 (D1 V8's are reliable even at high miles if serviced) and perhaps also running leaner than the Disco 1 V8. Anyway, if you are handy you.can run and inline top radiator hose thermostat, get rid of the 3 way thermostat and prolong engine life. Swapping out head gaskets is easy enough for the home mechanic and reasonably cheap. Cheers
