Thread: Transmission or XYZ switch?

My D2a has ta similar shift issue, from P its fine into R but if moving from D to R nothing happens, I have found when shifting from D to R I go passed R almost into P and then drop back to R and it works every time, when straight shifting from D to R nothing would show on the dash, I'm thinking the cable is in need of a slight adjustment, that will be done once things are back together (the trans was damaged from the front shaft letting go, had 330K on the clock and getting a bit tired anyway)

Me too. It's the most likely culprit. At 330,000 maybe a new cable wouldn't hurt. I don't know how much they wear at the shift lever end but it must be some. I know there is some wear in the linkage at the trans end.

Thank you, Redd! I was thinking and hoping it was something like that. Always a possibility it isn’t, however, hearing from someone who has experienced similar helps immensely.

There is a special tool to set the position of the XYZ but I found when I removed my shift lever that if you set the cable in Neutral so that the dash and selector both read N then it is generally Ok in all gears.
I must admit that I tried to ensure that I didn't shift the adjustment but you should be able to fix the problem with a bit of trial and error.
if it is that of course. it maybe something wrong with the XYZ , maybe a dirty contact or narrow on R. There are how tos on You tube on how to fix.
make sure you put an extension on the aircon drain to direct water away from the top of the XYZ. Great Land Rover design.

Thanks everyone for your input and knowledge. I’m very impressed by the help I’ve received from the d2 community. Next step is to hopefully purchase the vehicle. I will update when more is known.
