So, to be clear, if it's about part nr 12 here https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...nd/land-rover/ i phoned a friend who has a LR scrapyard and stripped many D2s in his life... that part can be removed safely only with the dash completely off to reach the clips, forcing it out from above will let it with the clips broken in 9 out of 10 cases that's what he said
You are spot on there. After getting it out with nearly all the underside plastic broken where the clips go and having seen how it is held in, I also formed the opinion that getting it out unbroken is not possible.
However, I did not break the actual vent so a bit of sikaflex will hold it in place.
This vent is not for demisting. It is to allow heat from radio to escape.
As for trying to feed a wire down, after half an hour I gave up.
Dervish, as yours had the wire there when you bought it, after my attempt I reckon more needs to be removed, radio maybe?
I went and took a few pics for You from my V8 that has that "vent" loose, and all the clips broken off by some previous owner.

And the view says, the radio is just there, so, removing the radio will suffice to be able to pull some wires.

And as an extra bonus a pic from when I cleaned up the wirings in my TD5 after I bought it.

Yes it is possible to get a wire to that spot. I mounted a gauge pod with 3 gauges, 3 rocker switches etc over the vent. Maybe around 20 wires and the hose for the boost gauge. To find a path for the wires have the radio out and probe with whipper snipper cord down to the access space below the steering column. Use the cord to pull the wires up thru the vent. I’ll post some photos of the process soon….
