Plus, not a huge demand for the D4 transmissions, the X5's etc are all commanding drug money these days, a couple on marketplace are around $4k and I did see a D4 8hp for $1600 a while ago. I've almost convinced myself its a bargain.....

Oooh good question! I would say so, but I don't know what it is if there is one. The vast majority of the M57/6HP conversions (with a very similar shifter to the 8HP) go into Defenders.

If I ever have to replace the gearbox I suspect I'd consider it as an option. Paying all that money for a 4 speed seemed a bit silly. The ZF 8 speed though would be a very neat upgrade.

looks so much better than the bmw one and it is almost a straight replacement. Quiete a few right ups and videos on you tube from people changing their shifters on their greandiers. They should have done that from factory

It is! If the transfer actuation is electronic or levers they might be able to be swapped over for RHD.

That one looks like it centred, the BMW ones I think are LHD and RHD, the lever is twisted slightly to face the driver.

The other thing which is cool, is the Supra one is also symetrical in the base which is good for looks and easier to manufacture.
