The threaded part takes either an Allen key or Torx bit on the rears
I have tried to remove the bottom part of the rear sway bar link, the part just spins around. There is nothing to grip with a spanner to stop it spinning around. The new part has a 16mm wide pair of flat surfaces. Perfect for a 16mm spanner to hold it still.
How do I stop the spin?

It is a 40 Torx. You need an 18mm ring spanner. I have to buy an 18mm rig spanner.

Yep, and sometimes they are so stuck, that both the allen key and/or the torx will break the tool, or strip within the socket on the link, so you get totally stuck with it spinning.

The second one stripped the Torx, I had enough room for a pair of molegrips (vicegrips) It did undo.
