    Petrol fumes after filling up

Having a beer at my friends place after filling up the car, we both noticed the whiff of petrol. On the way home I opened the window and the car filled with fumes. Never had this problem before.
I looked around for any obvious leak but couldn’t find anything.
Couldn’t really smell it under the bonnet, but was very noticeable under the rear drivers side wheel arch.
Is this likely to be caused by overfilling the tank, which I didn’t think I did, or something more ominous?

Lift the boot floor up and check the lines.

I didn’t know that the floor just lifted.

Hopefully its something simple like the pipework from the filler to the tank, the breather that runs beside it, or the seal/locking ring on the top of the tank.
    Cheers

You'll need a screwdriver to undo the trim and lift the carpet.

What everyone else said. But be bloody careful. Petrol ain't diesel. You probably know that of course, but better say it than not.

Thanks for the tip but not ready to be nominated for a Darwin Award just yet.
Smell seems to be subsiding a little, now the tank is not so full.
If I ever get a day off work, I’ll look a little closer.
    What’s diesel?

I'm reasonably sure I've figured out the problem.
I had a feeling that the flow kept coming a little too long when topping up after the filler nozzle had clicked off for the first time.
Seems it didn't want to shut off the second time at low flow and must have overflowed the filler flap and drained out the overflow, as it should.
My eyesight isn't great, so it's not surprising that I didn't notice.
Eventually the fuel smell disappeared and hasn't returned even after another refill.
