    Starting issue

Hi All, My 2004 D2 TD5 AUTO is having some issues starting after running.

The last couple of days about half the time I go to start the car after having run it for 15+ minutes the car won't start. I am not getting any sounds when turning the key as in the starter motor is not making a sound, all dash lights are coming on then going off as usual and all lights/wipers are working.

I have tried shifting through transmission gears, checked the nanocom for errors (found none), and cleaning the plugs at the ecu. I did also try resetting the isolator even though it hadn't triggered and it did turn on after once but I am not sure this was actually the fix. Seems like it just needs time to cool down then starts perfectly.

Any help or pointers on where to start would be greatly appreciated. I tried searching for other threads like this couldn't find any other ones where it was either no sound or starting perfectly.

As an FYI I did replace the engine mounts recently, don't know if I could have knocked something?

Yes. The wire that energises the starter is just there, RHS, or the main battery lead to the starter could be a little loose. There is also the starter relay in the under bonnet fuse box.

When you shift through the gears manually, do the lights in the selector and the gear position indicator in the odometer change? Could be the XYZ switch.

I would add that, along with a bunch of other weirdness, mine had starting issues. I eventually traced it back to green corrosion muck in the under dash fuse box. I usually mention this when people describe elec gremlins, because you never know. Have you had damp carpets after rain? It's fairly simple to pull it out and look. It also is easy to clean.

    Just a pointer or two.

Going from that description, if you can't hear a medium loud and obvious click/clunk noise, then it sounds like the starter solenoid wire may be a bit loose, or worn or both.

From underneath on the drivers side, you will see an obvious wire with a spade connector going to starter. IIRC, I think the wire colour could be yellow/black, but I can't recall exactly. Either way it's obvious.
I've had this on a couple now, there is a spade connector and i gets a bit loose on the spade lug on the starter. But also, the wire connection from wire to female spade connector can also be a bit dodgy too.
This wire engages the solenoid for the starter to work. If you get the solenoid clunk engagement, but no starter turning, then it could be worn contacts inside the starter.

I recently overhauled my starter. All was good for a few weeks and then one day it was dead.

Climed underneath and wiggled the small wire on the starter and away it went.

    Has been fine since.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Thankyou for the help, I really appreciate it

I checked the small wire from the relay on the starter motor and it was quite dirty plus a little loose. After cleaning and putting it back on correctly I haven't had any issues. Hopefully it stays working
