so we finally fired the old girl up and decided to bleed the system with no success. we looked at several guides, tried the land rover workshop manual way and can't seem to get any power assistance at all.
anyone have any ideas. or anything better than the very vague workshop manual.

For some reason putting a kit through a failed PS pump rarely seems successful. I ended up replacing mine.

If I'm following your issue correctly... when I recently replaced the PAS pump on my 2004 D2a, I took the O ring to Bursons (which by now looked like a flat washer), and we simply did our best to match it to a stock o-ring in those boxes they have - and everything was fine.

As for bleeding the system, have you fixed a clear plastic piece of hose to the bleed screw on top of the steering box, with the other end in the PAS fluid bottle? I did this, and then followed the workshop manual until the bubbles stopped. I found it tricky to get the bleed screw open enough but not too much...

When I did my D1 many years ago, I used an O ring 7mm x 2mm and it did not leak.

I reckon that D2 would probably be the same.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
