Both engines are 3950cc (close enough) but I think the D2 was called a 4.0 to match the Jeeps 4.0 engine.
The D2a refers to the 03/04 model years. The head lights were updated & CDL re-introduced.
What is the difference between the 3.9 in a D1 and the 4.0 in a D2?
Also what is difference between D2 and D2a?
Thanks

Thanks, were there any changes to power and torque? Are the electronics the same etc?
Which is more reliable? and economical?
The D2 uses the later Bosch injection with a different manifold set up. I'm not sure on the power & torque figures but the 4.0 is a lot more responsive than the earlier engine.
There are more electronics on the D2 but I would have to say they're both reliable enough. There's the odd sensor that might play up as with any electronic injection system.
Not too sure on economy but the later engine should be better in that regard. They are heavy cars though & neither would not be classed as economical.

I might be wrong but the series one used a hot wire type fuel injection where as the series two has a different system known as Thor engine size the same but power increase with series two.
Don't know about the series two to the series two update on the petrol howver the TD5 has better injectors and low down grunt. ( found this out through Rick's on the Gold Coast, ask a LR service centre not a dealer)
