Frequently! And through flooding roads. What maintenance can be done on the standard propshaft, other than eyeballing them from time to time?

Well when it's;
1. Not greasable
2. Has water dripping onto it
3. Sits next to the cat converter getting baked on a daily basis.
When I pulled my original apart, the grease was hard baked and could be flaked off in small hard pieces. It's lubrication properties were linited to zero.
Although I'm sure it's probably not ideal to do, can somebody please confirm:
1. You can drive the vehicle with the front shaft out, whilst it's being repaired.
2. The above can be done in CDL and non-CDL Disco's.
Thanks in advance.
You need to lock the cdl to drive without the front shaft fitted. So 1) is yes and 2) is cdl only.
I've just spent the last 48 hrs like this with no worries, but mechanic stressed be light on the accelerator.
Now have new driveshaft in. It's like a genetically-modified cow - nipples everywhere! The old one had lost two bearings completely, and I don't think it was the original as the uni joint at the front was greasable (although nothing else was). I'm wondering if previous owner had an issue with the driveshaft, and just had the one uni joint replaced. Cheap bugger.
off with my front shaft today, was getting a very light ticking sound on slight overun throttle only, no other noises, but i suspected it was uj's. lucky i took a look, 1 uj was about to pop its load. really surprising it wasnt making a racket the amount of wear on it.
anyhow, any thoughts on this ?

Oh, I think there is no other shaft that is comparable for strength and servicability.
