Check that your tyres are not out of round or flat-spotted.
I've been experiencing a very noticable shudder on the steering wheel, when driving around at low speeds, usually between 40 and 60. I've replaced all the tyrod ends, which were worn, still the same problem. Furthermore, at cruising speed you can really feel a vibration on the backrest of both the driver's seat and and passenger's seat. Now I've had the wheels balanced, balanced the front prop shaft, and that made it slightly better, but there is still that noticable overall vibration and steering shudder. The only other thing i can think of is a bent rim, but surely the guys who balanced the wheels would have picked it up.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Hendrik

The steering damper could be shot as well.
Broken engine mount, or flex joint on the exhaust, radius arm bushes.
I know you say you had the prop shaft balanced, but were the unis on the Double Cardan joint checked for wear??

You could also check the panhard rod bushes. unlikely to be the issue but possible.
When I had the prop shaft balanced, the uni's were checked and was all still fine. Ill investigate the flex joint on the exhaust see if thats a problem.
Does the vibration come on under load or when you're coasting? Auto or manual?
I hate to say it but I started getting a similar 'sounding' vibration when my auto was about to go bang. The speeds were higher though.

It occurs when coasting, and its a manual, so hopefully it wont go bang...
The only other things i can think of are, the shock mounts, see if there tight, rear drive shaft, front diff pinion bearing.
I'm only guessing though, i did have a wobble in the front and a vibration from a loose shock mount, after tightening it, it got rid of the wobble and a bit of the vibration, the rest of the vibration was the front prop shaft
Mine is a manual also.

At my 90000K service was told (MRAuto, Redcliffe) that my engine mounts needed replacing,(there big rubber thingies that flatten out) and that I could wait until the 100000K to have them done BUT i may start to feel steering vibration. This never happened but I had them done anyway, not an expensive job. I think this problem was mentioned on AULRO some time ago and rectified by replacing engine mounts.
