Whilst initially I was a little ****ed about it all I am quite excited and looking foward to getting the car back, so I can start to get it the way I want it.

Out of interest what are the most common mods that everyone does to their D2's? Lift?
Duel batteries?

Just looking at the best place to start, I am only wanting to do light 4WDing an just enjoy the vehicle, but ensure that it is reliable and set up correctly.

The tow bar tongue (assume reece hitch style) should be available at any decent auto parts store - even Supercrap has them.

You need to measure up what height you want, as there is a wide range available. The standard D2 one drops down at least 6" below the square opening - in my case, this is OK for my 6x4 garden trailer - but I also have a straight one for use with my camper trailer which has a much higher hitch.

It depends on the 4wding you want to do, but I would start on decent tyres maybe all-terrains, a bull bar & a set of decent recovery points. I suppose a lift depends how far off road you want to go. I have the SLS & would like to get a 2" lift but with smaller kids getting in & out, I would like a set of side/protection steps 1st to make it easier getting in & out & stop them stepping on the plastic strip. Dual battery depends if you go camping etc for fridges & lights & same with snorkel, if you plan to do river crossings etc. Hope this helps, others will have their views!!

Towbar tongue, should be able to pick up easy enough and Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide would be a second hand source.

Spare key: $300 is about right if you push a deal they might nock $10 or so off but my replacement cost me over $250 3 years ago. If it includes the cutting then its a good price. Also Range Rov can program the key to the vehicle, which you need to have done. A new key fob comes with a 17 and an 18 character bar code attached and these are entered in to the BCU in the D2

Having gone through the "I need a new ZF, mine's broken" - OK so it had a bloody great hole in the casing . A new one is about $12K a refurbished exchange will set you back around $3-4K

ok, she needs a new engine.

Two options - Repair the new engine with a rebuild, or I can get a completely new crate engine 4.6 high comp for a few hundred less.

Looking at approx $8500 either way.

What would you do?

4.6 better economy? Really?
Range Rov would be doing the work, I asked about cooling and he indicated it would be fine. They have a handful of New 4.6 motors from LR still in crates, so he can actually do this motor slightly cheaper than getting the existing one rebuilt.


On the other hand I just spoke to AMV and they have a new standard D2 motor available which i assume is complete (waiting to hear back) however I am looking around the $4500 mark, they still need to confirm, however this is much cheaper than everyone else is quoting?

I would need to factor in labour etc ($1k?), but I don't know now whether it's worth spending the possible additional $3k to get the 4.6 motor.

Now I am confused what to do.....
