Help TD5 runs strange
ok, i got some strange issues, did a bit of a search and found a couple of things to check that might be my prob but just needed a heads up if anyone has got any other ideas.
my td5 does strange hunting on abut half throttle mostly only when its cold. its accelerates for about 1 second, then looses about half power for a second then accelerates again then loses powere again pretty much almost spot on every second like a clock. alos recently started having issues on cold start backing out of driveway. no power on initial acceleration out of driveway for about 2 secs then a sudden thrust of power and big cloud of black smoke.
i have a brand new injector loom fitted about 3oooklms back and have a tombie ecu about 15000 klms back. also noticed this arvo after driving home from work a fairly burnt oiley smell under bonnet after i pulled up, this is also new and maybe related ??

Could it be a dirty MAF?
Boost regulator?

I had this on mine - The MAF seemed to cause hesitations and excessive turbo lag. I tried all sorts of cleaning but could not get it to come back. To prove it was the MAF I simply disconnected it, and the engine ran better than ever. You can get new MAF's on ebay from the UK fairly cheaply.
I also have had a regular recurrence of oil in the wiring loom, this showed up as rough running and apparent missing on one or more cylinders.
Both of these faults were correctly diagnosed by the onboard computer. But neither of them made any difference hot or cold......
So - for cold start issues, I've read that common fault is a leak on the injector O rings which causes air to enter the injector feed lines. this causes the injectors to run rough for a few minutes. Apparently it's a fairly cheap fix.

ok, got MAF out to clean it and apart from all the red bulldust in it from the capeyork trip it appears to be missing a sensor. can someone confirm that there is 2 sensor strips. mine appears to have lost 1 of these off the posts. guess my turbo got hungry and ate it.

There should be a strip between both the raised section.
I cant really see that clearly on your pics.

so there should be 2 hotwires ?
i have only one but it looks lke there should be 2. cleaned up the connections and the hotwire that is there and the car runs quite smoothly now, so definately a problem there. perhaps the second hotwire that is missing is the reason i seem to be using more fuel than i would like to and it runs a bit hot on heavy accel towing uphill.

Had exactly this problem a few months back. Thought i was having a problem with the EGR sticking closed when cold, traced it back an air line that runs from the air filter box, over the radiator and to a regulator on the other side of the engine. I'd cleaned the air filter, and had pinched the air line when i did it back up again
It felt like it was running on 3 cylinders when cold, once it warmed up another air line running from the radiator put some positive pressure in the system and all was good
I'd take off the radiator shroud and have a good look at that air line, if thats all good i'd at least clean out the EGR valve...
