Are they better, more powerful, a bolt in or is this a dumb question?

Given a sensor and mintake manifold swap though, I'm guessing the D1 ECU would run the D2 donk?
A mate has a d2 v8 and it has heaps of power and fuel consumption ait to bad!!!!
I'd say it would be a great conversion

Yes BUT, the things that make a D2 better than a D1 are really hard to transfer.
The Bosch ECU is specific to the VIN it is fitted to, and has the controls for the body functions and transmission. AFAIK the only way to get one would be to buy a NEW one from UK with all security and Body functions disabled.
The injection runs at higher pressure and is one way. New pumps/piping etc are necessary and they are very expensive.
If you transferrred the whole engine and fuel system it could be done but unless you had a wreck to work from it would be prohibitively expensive.
If you want to run the D1 ecu, it is simple as all v8s are backwards compatable. But all you have then is effectively a D1 V8 as it is the ECU and engine control system that makes a D2 better than a D1.
If you want to fit the Thor manifold to a D1 it can be done as I have done it, but it is difficult and expensive.
You would be better off selling your D1 V8 and getting a D2. Lord knows they are cheap.

The D2 has a little more power and more torque and slightly better economy. But it's also more complex and while the electronics are fairly reliable they can fail and prove costly to fix. The 4.0 litre block can also be a cause for concern - it seems to crack more than the 3.9.
Re-chipping your ECU is much cheaper and if you use a TEMS chip will yield more power, improved throttle response and better economy than the D2.
For the cost and aggro involved in swapping in a D2 power unit you might be better advised to consider a 4.6.
