I forgot to mention the hands down best oil filter you can buy ATM is Amsoils EaO filter. The media is a synthetic nano-fiber type licensed to Donaldson, and the filter is made by Wix with a silicon anti-drain back valve (ADBV).
Not sure if any of the Australian Amsoil importers are bring an ERR3340 equivalent in but it would flog an OE filter in filtration efficiency, flow and holding capacity. They are very, very good.
If your engine can accept a Z9 length filter without it crashing into diffs, etc, Donaldson make a high efficiency version P169071 filter, and Fleetguard an LF3487. Both are very close in peformance to the EaO.
They both use synthetic media that is over three times as efficient as the OE one, greater capacity, much better flow, etc. etc. but only use a nitrile ADBV that isn't that flash at sealing. Not a problem for a vertical installation, but one of our vehicles has the filter mounted at about 10* from horizontal.
I've used either for years now, but be prepared for sticker shock if you buy them :eek:

I started the D2 V8 on Shell synthetic - used to burn it like crazy. I then went to 5-50 Penrite and never looked back towing heavy load..2 tonn boat. I used HPR 30 in my D1 - the D2 has 135k and the D1 V8 auto has 255,000 and both are excellent strong engines.
My brother has a very good 4wd shop with plenty of tourers and procomp customers and his 44gallon drums only have Penrite in them. Penrite has been the oil of choice for many years I reckon. I used to use it in my pre-rover cars with success and got over 200,000 out of a very heavily modded holden 6 that used to pull insane revs every day of its life.

I run all my cars on KMart's KMX 20W/50 including my high reving 1360cc race Mini Cooper S in which the gearbox and engine share the same oil.
It is the only oil apart from Castrol Edge 25W/50 that gives me the same oil pressure hot or cold, and it's about 1/2 the price at around $17 for 5 litres.
Made by Shell, I think.
Graham Russell runs it in all his dyno engines, even racing Ford BDA and souped up road cars too. I've run the Disco on it for years and it's never complained.

Mobil1 in newer engines and Penrite Syn25 in the Classic atm but only due to its age. Only oil leak is the RMS which has always had a drip, yet the dipstick never ever drops off.
Even on a trip down south first week of jan with 700 odd kgs behind it and about 1500k's in 35+ temp, oil level was exactly where I left it!

I'm using Penrite HPR10 (10w 50) in my 02 V8 Disco, changing every 6k's along with the Fram filter and hasn't used a drop...seems to work just fine. I combine mine with Proma MBL8 which is magic stuff.
I decided on Penrite after reading loads of positive comments about their oils in this forum and so far more than happy with my decision. I get mine from Supercheap who sometimes do great deals on the stuff.
My current problem is the recent arrival of the dreaded 3 amigos which I will need to get sorted...sigh!

Everyone, thank you so much for your replies. It has been very helpful to read of others experiences. I think I will go with the penrite stuff and use Original 'off the shelf' filters where possible.... I figure at cost it should be under $200 to buy all the parts (excluding sales) and can do the work with hubby.
i've never been one to shy away from the 'dirty stuff' ... brings me back to a time when I was doing a motor mechanics course in high school and one of the big burly guys who I had teamed up with just stood there cos he didn't want to get his 'hands dirty' as he put it - :tease:
