    Coil change out

Hi, I am a tojo man but my mum has a disco 2 and i am about to change the suspension for her before the canning stock route. I havd read in a couple of places that a spring compressor has to be used to remove and install the coils. Is this correct? can i not "jack" the axle from the chassis and pull them out?
Any links to a manual or instructions for this that someone knows of?

The kit purchased was an ironman with foam cell shocks, any comments on that too?

    Cheers, Rob

I put 2" lift springs in my Disco without a spring compressor, the standard springs certainly dont need to be compressed to get out.
If I was travelling in any remote area I would (and do) use Quality Suspension units, I have heard Nothing good about Ironman gear and I wouldn't trust it as far as I can spit, let alone on the CSR.
You shouldn't need instructions to do this job, it's just a matter of removing the old and replacing with the new. Springs that I have had personal experience of and find excellent are Lovells, OME, there's only one shock I would recommend, Bilstien, exxy but better than being stuck in the middle of nowhere with crap suspension IMHO, Regards Frank.

Rob - cant help you mate, but a word of caution...dont start getting under the Disco's cause you will see how much stronger they are to the Toyos and you will start blubbing and want one! You will then join a select few who go to the dark side never to return...you may well end up with more than one too

    Stay clear Will Robinson!

Rob, as stated you won't need compressors to remove the orginal springs. As for install new ones, depends on wether you have raised coils or standard height. If your mum is getting raised, and I guess 2" is the norm, the for the front no probs, they will go in with little persuasion , however the back is trickier. I have heard of some getting lifted coils in without compressors, but this would require the truck to be lifted very high, (read tall axle stands and jack etc), to get the axle to drop enough. We did use compressors on the back with no dramas. The only other parts we removed to allow install were the brake calipers.

    regards
    Nick

Rears are far easier to swap than fronts, the rear will droop down enough for the springs to almost fall out, fronts (if lifted springs) will take more effort to get in unless you disconnect panhard and lever the front diff down. I did my fronts without a compressor by myself and it was a sh@t of a job, if i ever do it again i'll buy a spring compressor.

Is your comment re Ironman suspension firsthand, or was it a friend of your uncle's workmate's cousin's neighbour's dog?

I had Ironman on my previous vehicle & now have it on the Disco 2 .... .& couldn't be happier!

I wouldn't be fitting the foam cells for a journey like that. I'd be fitting Bilsteins also.

Just to clarify, the rear axle on the D2 wont drop down to china. It is limited by the brake lines and then watts linkage for drop and radius arms for twist. The front is limited by brakes lines and the propshaft hitting the Xmember (be aware of this one!) and again the radius arms for twist. You can undo all of these and not do it with spring compressors - or you can lash out with the $30 and get a set.

Actually it was a friend of mine's friend, my friend had Ironman setup and replaced it within a year, shocks were stuffed and springs had started to sag, now His friend had such a bad experience that he sued the company after they had replaced his suspension a couple of times under warranty, there was a write up about the episode on either the Outer limits Forum or 4WD Action forum, complete with pictures, from memory it was about 2 years ago.
Advice was asked for so I based my opinion on the problems my mate had and also on the documented problems his mate had, these 2 episodes are included in my advice because I have seen first hand, and I advised accordingly, Regards Frank.

Word is that Tough Dog are doing quite a bit of work with some Landy gurus to make up lift kits similar to the one they sell for Toyos and Nissbombs
