D2 - 145K clunk in diff...and transfer case
Hi all. My V8 Manual is giving me grief. Over time it has developed 2 drivetrain slap sounds...one is from the play in the transfer case. The front prop shaft wiggle is producing a tinny slapping sound in the case. Also, more alarmingly there is a louder more thumping sound coming from the rear diff...dont need the screwdriver to the ear to hear that its from there and not outboard, but using the screwdriver its not pretty. I tow a 2 tonn boat and have used it a fair bit off road where the diffs cop a flogging from the traction control only set up (ie not CDL). Am I up for a new diff centre....and how long can I get away with it. It does not whine but on take off you can hear it and feel it slightly....but take off slowly and its not noticeable.
What are the costs. If I went for a CDL at the same time and blew some money on her (new transfer case with CDL) I would lock up the rear also by way of new arb air locker centre say...
Cheers

Seeming as nobody else is replying and not wanting to be a doomsday merchant.... I found that an increase in lash and clunking comes from the planetary gears in the diff disintegrating from 4WDing etc. You may find crushed bits of it on the magnetic drain plug.
From the transfer I've had the lash adjusted out by a specialist - just wear and tear.

A full diff rebuild on D1 (incl bearings) can be got for about $400, so I can't imagine D2 diffs costing much more.
Transfer case - would you consider low k late model D2 as donor? Check out a price with TRS in Adelaide.

Well if it's any consolation - My Classic Range Rover has had a very loud transfer case whine - lots of backlash in the rear diff, and centre diff. It's been offroaded - towed a horse float - etc. First noticed when I bought it 15 years ago - I've done 300,000k's on it. I think some slap is normal - Even my 6,000k old defender has some slap when you wiggle the props. The noise has not changed in that time.
However if the noise has drastically changed recently then it's likely to be something about to top itself.

Thanks mate - that gives me some comfort. I spoke to a bloke today who has worked on LRs for 20 years and he reckons he has seen plenty of D1s with blown diffs, but only one D2 and that was the front from abuse.
I know from this site though that the rear can go bang.

Don't forget to check the slip joint in the tailshafts for play. It all adds up.

Much happier now...got it looked at by a bloke who is very experienced with LRs. He says that play in drive line both for transfer case and rear diff is perfectly acceptable. The sound is the front CV joint pass side...no play in wheel but loud clicking sound so next week boot off and inspection. Plus another interesting sound was tracked down to a stuffed pass side catalytic converter...so thats being replaced as a cut and shut with an aftermarket too.
Cheers and thanks
